Hi Georg my dad was from Dresden, 3 plant is up and running again will get some pics and post later
Alf, you must go and see the town someday. I get there about once in a year. My parents in law live there. It's beautiful, even without braais... hahaha
Plenty of Beer i hope.....
Plenty! As many types you like.
Weizenbier is popular hier in summer. It's made of wheat.
Alfred Dad was born in Leipzig (sp) all his cousin's and extended family in Dresden.I've got many photo's of Dresden pre and post war,a beautiful town.I also inherited a Dresden China Tea Set (for 12) from my Ouma, white and gold trim.So thin you can just about see through it.Also a beautiful dining room suite made pre -war (don't remember the wood used) worth quite a bit now.My ouma's sister had to chop theirs up for fire wood during the war, such a shame.

As my oldman mentioned, Meissen is the place the porcelan comes from.
Here's the story. At least part of it. One of the Sachson kings, I think it was August der Starke, wanted one of his alchemist to find out how to make gold. there was some threat if he didn't. Don't remember which one. In the end they made up this "Meissener Porzelan". Who knows if it's true.
Dresden 2: Video Nr 2 from the old town parts

The famouse "Frauenkirche".
A prussion king once try to destroy the church. He let cannons shoot at the church for days. It withstood. In WW2 british napalm bombs turned Dresden into a gigantic inferno. After the fire was out the church fell in itself. The soshialists in the GDR had no interest in rebuilding. The ruins lay about till about 1993.
Fonds were raised. Only private money. In a whole it was 120 000 000 €. At first I found the Idea stupid. But having heard the story of the church (more details than I intend to wright) I was convinced of the importancen. Coventry was one of the towns from which the bombers came. This town donated the golden cross (can't find the picture I made) for the top of the church. This is a form of peace politics.
They tried to use as much of the old material (the darker stones you see on the pic) as possible.
I saw a film of the day the church was opened. There were so many people who survived the war and had yet losted their loved ones. Dresden is very proud.
It's probably the most beautiful church I have ever seen. And there are so many in Europe. I think the original church could take 3500 people at once. If you could see how little the ground is, it's hard to believe. There is so much more to tell...
1.) The "Frauenkirche"
2.) Interior 1
3.) Interior 2
4.) The old cross that was found in the ruins.
Oops Alfred yes Dad was born in Dresden then lived in Leipzig.
You Georg's have now got me visiting the sites of Dresden and porcelan on the net.
Strange that you should post the "Frauenkirche" my aunt was just telling me about it to-day.She also has the video of the opening.
These pics were taken in 2002.
1.) The original stones tidely sorted to be put together like a puzzle.
2.) The church packed in steel.
3.) Seen from a light distance.
4:) The cross donated by Coventry ready to be put on top.
I was never interested in the town till I met my wife. Now I see the town once in a year and can see how the town improves. It's just beautiful. The people are nice too.

Nice picture. Pity it doesn't exist this way anymore. i've written a couple of sentances to this place before. It's the castle in which I think Paula would like to live in. In the tower! Without a key from the inside.
Jokes aside. My parents in law grew up hear. Plenty of exiting stories but no time to write at the moment. Catch up as soon as I can.
Looks lovely, a bit like a picture out a fairy tale book.
Hey Georg Jr, I don't mind the tower, it's the princess that gets to stay there,so there! :emot172:
beautiful

No no Paula, no Princess there, only the Mistress of August was banned, to live there for many years.....
No fun, just vegetating
I have tested the iron bars for you, the place is reserved for Paula if she dares to appear there, no chance to escape !!!!! I was released again for my good conduct....
For Paula i foresee a dark future
