this includes Namibia. Namdeb gets all its power from South Africa.

This is a very interesting topic, and has received great exposure in the SOuth African press..... I hope that when they stop exports to foreign countries, they start with ZIM, as this country has been receiving free power.... when they do get around to NAM, they will switch of the main Kokerboom link that goes to Windhoek.... Oranjemund is not on that link, and NAMDEB has their "own" line that feeds the DEBEERS mines on the west coast..... but somehow I guees the knob who had the bright idea of shutting down Omunds power station must be kicking himself now.....

Time to start buying generators. Heard a rumor that spar already have placed a huge order! And Shell will run tankers delivering around town with diesel to top up tour tanks. Very big k*k, indeed. The whole economy is feeling the impact of this "load-shedding" thing already. This morning on Morning Live (SABC2) there was a panel discussion about all this sheiz. Escom is blaming the government and the government idiot who stuttered all along, was blaming Escom and together they were all blaming the consumers and via e-mail and other methods all the consumers were blaming Escom and the government.
Final blow in short - the Escom representative said that the rise in demand for more power, due to rural growth and government policy to supply electricity to all rural areas and normal development in all areas, Escom cannot meet the demand. They are currently building new power stations in the country, but by the time these are able to come into full production, the demand will have increased again. No-body says, that due to this foresight, Escom and the government has already put plans on the table to build more new power stations! Same story is going to carry on for a very long time!
All I can say is that I bet the powers that be are still supplying to Zim for free and not telling anybody. Well Between Zuma, Selebi Anglotti, Mbeki and the Scorpions throw a spanner or a few millions and you might just get something right. Intreresting to note that Interpol was started by the Nazi regime and looks like Selebi was trying to resurect it in his own way and Mbeki saying he knew of no wrong doings by his own Police chief!. How the hell can we believe any thing any more if the whole bang shute is corrupt as hell. Place your orders now for generators or plant sugar cane and make your own fuel for the genorators and the oil price is going to go thru the roof as the economy goes down. Look at the markets yesterday and today they are dropping like stones. Skinny over and out.
I was reading this page at http://www.poweralert.co.za/poweralert3/index.php?location=online#info_top and I noticed that the west coast area of Port Nolloth, Springbok, Kleinzee, Alexander Bay aRE not on the lists for load shedding.... oranjemund is on this line also...... I also read on another article that the reason why certain areas do not get load shedding, as they do not have automated switching gear that is controlled by remote from JHB, so if we do get load shedding, it should be planned...... if 100 000 households all turned of one 60 Watt lightbulb ..........

They put the cow dung into big tanks. The (Methan) gets "captured" and later used for heating or in cars instead of petrol. We call it Biogas.

IOW all your household sewage and food waste gets turned into methane gas for cooking and heating ... about time we all started looking at such things .. me started with water savings via grey water recycling for toilet flushing .. rain water harvesting ... electricity via solar geyser and CFL lights ... if I had more space on property in would go a biogas digester ... next is my recycling bins and a worm farm ... the future should be from biomass ie reusing waste matter for fuel and heating not the crazy trend of crops for Biofuel and Biopolymers .. its a croc of s...t that marketers are trying to sell to us ...

Kudo Project has been stopped the gas off shore is being sold in US dollars and is to expencive to run (so I have heard)
I concur with Alfie, Kudu ain't gonna happen, the reserves are not as big as expected.... I did read today on the NAMIBIAN.com.na site that the Australians are planning to build a wave generating power plant on the southern Namibian coast to power Keetmanshoop...

They want the mines to close for 6 weeks ??

Thats what Kudu was meant to be all about, but the reserves and money are not what everyone thought they would be.... My own personal favourite would be to build huge solar arrays at keetmanshoop, the 5th sunniest place in the world, Windfarms at EBAY ... .....i WAS never in favour of the eyesore of this gas power station being put up here anyhow.....

Ja, solar panels, I feel that the government expects all middle class families to supply there own panels, and generally everyone would generate enough energy to sell back to the grid. Why are they not installing solar panels on all the new houses they build.
The answer to that question is general apathy by government and $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
They dished out free energy saver light bulbs in Namibia like they did in ZA, but I see somewhere that this kind of light is linked to epilepsy.....

re light saving - I read that, the bulbs are pretty mean anyway (in brightness) I did try them, as quick as I put them in Finbar removed them.
CFL lights Bright yes .. thats the cheapie government issue , I also wont use those they are ghastly , light your home up like an office block ... available on the shop shelves warm white cfl globes .. I use them for all my side lights , in the garden and for front of house floodlights .. its a case of shopping carefully ... ...
On News24 today... "The government also emphasised that it will not be cutting power supply to other countries in order to improve South Africa's supply."

What a fiasco!!!! Everyone involved should be fired including out Deputy President and Minister of Minerals and Energy. You are quite correct Michael, everyone has to do their bit to save energy. I get mighty upset when I'm sitting without electricity for 6 hours to 10 hours a day (really bad here) and I walk into an office or shop and the airconditionerrs are on full blast. People just don't seem to grasp the seriousness of the situation. Carte Blanche last night was a real eye opener and proves that we're in this situation because of "affirmative action" and BEE policies and for no other reason.

@ Carte Blanche, I liked the way the Affirmative chief of EKSDOM refused the interview pushed that Fat white boy onto Derek's spear, the way he kept blinking like that, the way Derek made him squirm...... whatever happened to those 30m high coal stockpiles outside the power stations.... Blink blink....... To be honest with you guys , I actually enjoy power outages , except for the loss of stock and sales, it's enjoyable, back to nature, back to a time when the earth was a much quieter place.....

We can moan and groan about this sheiz, draw up petitions, write letters to Escom, do the toi-toi thing : It's not going to help us one bit, for the paw-paw is in the fan and unfortunatly not one of the big bosses from yesteryear of the current one's know how to avoid the pips from flying all over the world.
If I did have a say in the matter - amend legislation of the law and privatise the electricity supply business. I think we will be surprized at how many people or companies out there are just waiting for this oppertunity to jump into the market.
I actually find it quite amusing to see white people joining in with the Toy Toying sessions over the last 3 days, kinda like the knotting hill carnival with a purpose......
I also read the NZ online papers quite a bit this week, front page murders and stuff..... so it does not matter where you are in the world......

Report newspaper dated 03/02/08 said Eskom has cut export to neighbouring countries from 6% to 5% and that we subsidise their electricity, we pay 44c/kWh and they get it for 11c/kWh. Eskom hasn't denied that households in neighbouring countries pay much less than here. They said that we will be paying 14,2% more as from 1 April but won't say by how much they are going to increase the price to the neighbouring countries. Why are we supplying other countries if we have a shortage, especially at a price much lower? Doesn't make sense to me.

"The chief of one of New Zealand's biggest electricity suppliers says the danger of power cuts this winter is greater than at any time he can remember.
Keith Turner, of Meridian Energy, told Parliament's commerce committee yesterday that a meeting of industry bosses on Wednesday had looked at pressures on the system.
He believed there would be enough generation and demand control to cover unexpected failures, but "it is a very fine margin - finer than I have seen it in my career".
Dr Turner is stepping down from his leadership role at the end of next month after 39 years in the industry.
He told the MPs that problems and worries were caused by lower-than-usual flows into lakes, the Cook Strait cable being down to one operational pole and the Huntly power station not operating at full capacity because of cooling issues.
He unplanned closure of a Contact Energy plant in Taranaki was also coinciding with planned maintenance at other plants.
Work was being done to reduce the risk, and the second pole of the Cook Strait cable was being partially re-opened.
New Vector chief executive Simon Mackenzie said security of supply was a major issue facing Vector and the industry.
A series of factors had combined to put the national system on the edge, and it would not take much before limited cuts, such as turning off home hot-water systems, became necessary.
Transpower chief executive Patrick Strange told Radio New Zealand yesterday that a decision on reactivating the Pole One power cable in Cook Strait would be made next month.
The cable was turned off last year because of its age and safety concerns.
Genesis Energy, New Zealand's largest energy retailer, said last night it was expected that this winter could be tight in terms of supply.
But there were a lot of variables to consider.
"The inflows of rain into the southern lakes in the South Island has been below average in the last month or so and if there is no rain in autumn, then things could be pretty tight," said spokesman Richard Gordon."
