Post by: georg ruf jr. on January 25, 2008, 08:40:05 AM
There were so many lekker sweets in SA I missed a long time, because you don't get them here. Some of these I saw in England...

peppermint crips, I take it bite the ends off and suck milk up through the choc, milk tastes like peppermint milkshake then, I know I'm weared, have a lot off funny ways to eat my chocs, plain choc I like to take a piece and dip it in hot coffee then its all melted and soft when I eat it, as for choc logs, that gets taken apart, choc all eaten first then the nougert rolled up and popped into my mouth and last the waffer. Kit Kats they are eaten layer by layer!

"Nicknacks, so tasty" Lovely cheesy flavour. There's nothing that compares here. The best chips are the British ones. If you ever go to England you'll see. They have so many flavours.... Anything you can imagine.
Biltong. Tried something simular in USA, but it was sweetened. Do the eat anything without sugar???

Way...way...back in the early 60's , they had what they called the "Tickey Line". A glass covered counter, just high enough for little ones (much like the one at Cora's Cafe) you could get a whole bag of sweets for a tickey. I can still remember how the shop was laid out then. They says the older you get the more clearly you remember the past.

You gotta read a few comics while you eat them, Dandy, Beano or Beezer, else they just don't taste the same....

Hiya Barb, an animal bar is a kids chocolate bar made by nestle which has the imprint of various animals on it. I first tasted them in O'mund as on a regular basis the Alexanders used to get them in the post from their relations in Scotland along with comic books................Luckily enough there were 6 of these bars in a packet and my family grew up with Mikes, so lucky us, we always got an animal bar whenever they arrived.

I can now confess a very bad habit...or addiction of mine regarding sweets.......eating paper.........600 sheets in a box....on average i have eaten a box a day for at least 15 years........ some times i would run out.....or the suppliers would run out and i would crave for it like mad........everyone knows me for the eating paper....im also very mean with it ....dont like anyone asking for any ha ha.....however......i can now say i am cured.......i have 1 box in a secret place for if i get the craving back but i have been cured for about a month now.......it has travelled with me all over the world.....first thing i would pack in my case would be a weeks supply of the stuff............and at £4 per box..it was as expensive as smoking.....

oh well......just thought id share that with you all .......cause it is a BIG thing to me that i have now stopped eating it......
Also used to have our own sweet business a few years ago selling every old fashioned sweet you can think of and still go to the ware houses regular....so if anyone has a real craving for any english sweets from the past ....let me know.......ill see if i can get it.

That's brave of you to tell us that story Bev. Never heard anything of the kind. Let alone the thought of having to eat the stuff myself. My kids always liked it. When I watched my kids eating paper I always got a dry mouth.  feedme :36_2_24:
