Just 3 pics of the middle of town this morning, The PEP store is a privately owned building , that was erected on the carpark adjacent to the Bioscope..
And a few more...
Mike
Something that caught my eye on the pics you took around town is that some of the buildings have been painted in brighter colours!! During my 12 year stay from 1975 until 1987 almost all the buildings and houses were painted in duller colours. Well they saying goes: A Change is as good as a holiday.
Cheers
Charmain
The town was always painted in white and beige, then along came the GM's wife, Stefanie Ashworth and she wanted to brighten the place up and had the workers paint the buildings a rainbow of colours, the minestore is now a neon yellow colour, the Local mess a purple colour.....
Wow, thank you, I remember the stone walls and outside facades of some buildings, really stretching the memory. Some comments and questions for debate.
1. where would a small dusty town in rural africa be without a PEP? Springbok was the closest one in my time.
2. What is the old bioscope used for now.
3. Sportsman's could do with a lick of paint, I liked the Namibian rugby teams colours, just a suggestion.
4. Correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like there's a lot more parking available.
5. Flamingoes, painted pinky mauve Mrs GM has a funny side, ha ha.
Don't know how I missed these photo's,brings back a lot of memories. That stone wall around the Rec Club and I see those two big cement walled planters are still outside the movie house.Barbs I think it is or was used as a nite club. I don't realy care much for the bright paint works. I take it one doesn't go into town with a hangover.
It depends on what caused the hangover?

Fantastic Michael.
I remember the Hexenkessel opening in the 70s and I remember eating there on Xmas once or twice.
What is a nightclub in SA? In Germany it would a place with a red lamp outside and sparely dressed women, if not to say naked (stripped) women inside,.
Is there still the "sports building" behind the bioscope: Karate, boxing, squash, badminton ect. ?
Ok..... Georg Jnr, Behind the Bioscope building is still the Karate, badmington, Squash, Gym and Vollyball club, I notice these days that the Karate, Squash and Gym are still very popular....
@ Barbara..... The Old Bioscope is a raging Nightclub called nitecall...very popular and often shuts down only at 05hoo in the morning..... more for the masses though....
the sportsmans is now owned and run by a private guy, who turned the stauchlager into a sushi bar for a wee while...., the building still belongs to the company though...
as for the parking....plenty... and no parking meters... it's always funny on payday to watch oranjemunders cruise the parking lot outside spar, looking for the closest parking.... hell everwhere is close in comparison....

It's the same all over the world Michael.

I don't know if I mentioned it yet, but there are a few buildings that have been built by private companies and even though they do not own the land on which they have built, the building belongs to them and not the mine...they pay some cheap rate for power and water... an example is the top pic in here of the PEP store building.... PEP built that building at their own cost and it is built on the old parking lot next to the bioscope...
