Hi All,
The other day we were at a long service award and somebody reminded me of the amount of people in the hall who had been here for yonks (and been to school here)... I struck me that most of us would have got our first caining at OPS... now there's a memory!!
My first caning was in sub B. The teacher in question was no other than our own Dawn Watt (Dawn Johnson then I think???) and with a feather duster no less. I remember the event clearly, Wayne Handly had been splashing mud on the Sub B toilet walls and then ran off. I thought I'd be a good lad and clean the wall, so I grabbed a nearby mop and dipped it into the bucket of water and splashed it on the wall, unfortunately the bucket also contained all the muddy water that Wayne had been splashing on the walls so somebody saw me mopping the walls with mud!!!! The next thing I knew was that I was getting called out of my class after break because because Ms. Johnson wanted to see me in the STD 1 block, so off I went and was most puzzled to receive my 2 or 3 swots with the old duster!!!! - Dawn, if you read this I'm still waiting for my 6 pack bottle of beer appology and for a trip to Keetmans with you so we can give old Wayne Handly the spanking he deserves
Poor Mel, no wonder you don't help with the housework - place would end up worse than when you began!
Hey Paul, Dawns a happily married woman to that great Stormers supporter guy called Roger, Leave her outta your twisted spanking threesomes...
;D
When I think of OPS and hidings the science teacher comes to mind!! I think his name was Mr Cloete. He had that evil white stick that he used to hit us girls on the ends of our fingers with!! That has to be illegal by now. May even have been illegal then it was so bad. I do remember he was short and could run really really fast.
Evenink Rebecca, I just scanned some photo's that Dawn let me use for the next update of the website, and there were quite a few of the OPS staff, dated 1975, 1981,1982 .. and that man is there, Piet Cloete, that short sadistic man with that white pointer called "The White Doctor" .. I remember in his science class, Sean Emery was always looking half goofed or something at the back row, Permanently meeting that white doctor..
I'll tell you another lekker story about Sean sometime...
;)
I think my first caning was from Piet Cloete - can't really remember what it was for (obviously the point he was trying to make never really stuck).
That the start of my long association with the cane. ::)
Warren , was that cane with coke or lemonade...... ;D
Hmmm cane and coke. Mike - You may have just stumbled on some disturbing underlying issues here...
So we should sue OPS for turning us all into raging alcoholics.....
;)
Sue or give credit where credit is due?
i am still going shtrong on the cane and coke issue.......
i think my first good wacking came from mr van rensburg ( i think thats him) he was the junior principle or something like that , i remember his office was in a quad near that old fish pond
Hi all,
That first hiding...... who could forget that? Robert Kermis and I were caught talking by Mrs.Castle in sub B. She called us in to her empty classroom, promptly gathered and bundled about 7 or 8 of those small wooden rulers together, and whack !! Robert first, then me. I think half of them broke on Robert ....... not a great sight for number two in line, I can assure you. Then it was my turn..... Whack !!, I can hear it now LOL. She sure went through her fair share of rulers that day. Another memory I have of her is she used to have a whole pack of cardboard cards with the times tables written on the front of them. All the kids would be sitting on the carpet on the floor in front of her, while she displayed them to us one at a time. Once displayed, she would call out random names, and we were expected to rattle off the answers quick smart. Maths was never a forte of mine, and I can remember trying to avoid eye contact with her by hiding behind one of the other kids heads. I am perspiring now, just thinking about it LOL.
Does anyone know the fate of Mrs.Castle or Robert Kermis?
Hi - Robbie Kermis now lives in JHB. If I'm not mistaken he supplies vehicles to movie producers to film TV adverts. Something like that...
I saw him a while ago at my brother's wedding in Durban. His brother - Gilbert Kermis is my step-father.
Hi Warren,
Thanks for that information mate. I have often wondered what happened to old Robbie. Sounds like he must be doing all right for himself. I don't suppose you have an email address do you? By the way, please send my regards to Gilbert.Thanks. I think I remember your Dad........ Was his name Denzil ?
Back to the hidings... Anyone remember the English teacher who took over from Miss Manning (married Corbett); he used a cricket bat that was chalked so it left a chalk mark on your backside.
Remember getting bliksemd by Mr Nel (Std 5 maths), can't remember what for, just remember all the wackers stacked ontop of the intercom speaker and being told to choose one. Soon learnt that I chose the wrong one.
How was Sakkie Bergh? He could pound the wind right out of you with a mean flat hand between the shoulder blades. OOooomf! I can remember that one clearly.
Yes - Denzil, that's correct.
He retired a few years ago and opened a guest farm somewhere outside Poterville (strange little place) on the SA west coast. He has since sold it and retired properly in Porterville.
Cheers for that info Warren!
Andrew, I don't know if you remember me but I was in your class when you got that hiding, this is Sharon Fields, and boy I could not believe it he hit so hard your face went white to red, he was evil.........
Mrs Castle gave me my first klap, I think it was for something silly like not breathing through my nose . I always got my intake of life sustaining oxygen through my mouth and not my nose, so as a youngster , I always sat with my mouth wide open, some teachers could'nt take it....... :'(
Michael you were mentioning your overweight due to the amount of water in beer. Wrong!
It's breathing through your mouth causing an oversized chest. Now gravity has made your chest slipp to your belly...
:emot19: :emot19:
Hey Andrew, I see you were also a victim of the famous Sakkie Bergh. When he wasn't bashing you on your back, he had this leather strap attached to a wooden handle that he would assault you with. If I remember correctly, he called it "Willie Hoorie". I remember the female teachers at OPS were too scared to assault us in those days and sent us either to Mr Cloete or Sakkie Bergh with a note which described our transgression. After receiving our "cuts" we had to return to her class with the signed note.
My Dad and Sakkie Bergh almost came to blows one evening. Sakkie had caned my brother at school one day and my Dad saw the bruising that evening. He marched my brother over to Sakkies house (he lived diagonally across from us) and demanded an explanation. You could hear the shouting and swearing from our house. Luckily for Sakkie, my Dad cooled down and no blows were exchanged.
