It's a bad evening, as My Other Best Friend just died about 40 minutes ago..... Dollar , my dog and the only other male in the House died from a heart attack...... I noticed something was up when we were down at the beach on the weekend.... he just froze in his tracks, looked down, and seemed to be on pause for a few minutes... then he went back to normal...the vet reckons that could have been a minor heart attack at the time...... He was an old dog at the good age of 11.... Born in Swellendam, Cape Province in 1997..... he emigrated with his sister, the late and goofy Sasha, to Namibia, where they both had a great, naughty life...... He would often come and wake me up if I overslept..... we would often sing/howl together....... and we have even been known to braaaaaai together......
I'll miss my friend......
:emot78:
Oh Michael, I am sorry to here about the loss of your dear friend. bighug

Ah Mike, I'm sorry to hear about your buddy..........wanna hug?
Sorry about that mike. I've made the experiance to. I feel with you...
Mike big hug
the only down side to having any pet.........love to all your family mike...... e154
ps .....where is michele by the way.....not seen her for ages......
Mike, sorry to hear about your buddy. I had a cat in O'mund that I took back to France with me when we left. He was just the greatest and lived to be 18. I still think of him and the joys he brought me. My advice, get another dog. It won't replace the one you've just lost, but you'll learn to love it too and it will bring you so much joy. e154
Thanks all...... it's really appreciated, it's amazing how these four legged creatures become part of the family...not just a pet...... Damn! Whom I gonna take to the beach for walks now? I'll ask the cat, even though she's getting a bit crazy in her old age theses days.....
Well Dollar has gone of to the big kennel in the sky .. yes Mike its like losing a child and a friend all in one ... and yes because we live longer we go through the same scenario many times in our lives .. but that never stops us from loving over and over , and ultimately with time another child and friend all rolled into one happens upon our life .. keep the good memories in your heart ... My thoughts are with you Michael ...
Ag shame mike...I'm so sorry. I do hope you feel better soon. Friends like these are irreplaceable.... iknow
Mike, a big furry hug to you, Michelle & your girls on your loss - as an animal lover, it always warms my heart to know a dog/cat has had a good life filled with love & joy with a loving family - they give so much, expecting so little in return. Dollar was a lucky pooch to have lived his life with you guys. Remember and honour him with all the happy times you shared - he'll be watching over you always.
Sorry Mike, feeling sad now too. Funny thing is, we are actually crying for ourselves, your dog is happy where he is. We cry for the times we had and the times we can't have any more. I agree with Patricia, best thing you can do in Dollar's memory, is get another one as soon as possible. Helps take your mind off the hurt and keeps you busy trying to house-train him. We have 2 dogs and 2 cats in town with us and 1 dog and 1 cat on the farm. Had to leave our dog and cat on the farm because they had grown up there and were used to the wide open spaces. Brought my old, old staffi/pug called Goofy and son's bloody naughty jack russell called pilot, to town, as well as a totally black cat (Daxx) and a snow white cat (Tipsy) with us. The dog on the farm is a Weimeraner, they are those grey dogs born with blue eyes that turn amber. I can highly recommend one if you have the space. Sandy is a fantastic dog. She loves children but at the same time is an excellent watch dog, has an enormous bark and very awake. Clever too. All the dogs loved the doghouse closest to our back door and if one of the other dogs were in it, Sandy would run into the shed and bark like mad until they came running, then she would sprint back to get into the doghouse by the door. The foreman and his wife can't have kids, so they have a zoo on the farm to which our Sandy and Bronwyn have been lovingly added. My husband says if he has to come back to earth again, he wants to come back as one of my cats. They are spoilt and get more attention than him. Daxx is my PC black child who gets to sleep on my chest whenever I sit and he purrs like a tractor with the timing out. I believe if animals don't have souls then neither do we. My animals have more character than some people I've met. Let us know if you get a new addition to the family.
Mike, I know you are the only male in the house but I would still recommend a female dog. They don't pee against everything like most of the male dogs do, and let's face it, nothing looks worse than a male dog that's happy to see your visitors. Sorry guys but a "plattetjie" just looks neater/nicer than a "hangetjie".
:emot78: Well, now I have to go to the bathroom to go wash my face and put my make-up on again!
Take the cat - they like to walk with you - good listeners and they talk back as well.
You have made me feel so damn sad about this dog whom I did'nt even know (just the photo's in the pet section and the stories about him). Yep, his name might have been Dollar - but I bet ya .......... no amount written behind that name could equal the value of him.
Can you imagine how much I cry when one of my own animals pass on, when I feel this bad about your Dollar?
I think about you guys.....
Thanks and Sorry, I did not mean to make everyone feel down, I just that I had to make a "noise" about his death, I could'nt just let him go quietly...he would'nt have liked that.....
Thanks anyhow!
fireworks1
Sympathy to you and the family Mike. Have a toast to Dollar's life and the joy he brought you. Cherry
Hope this works. A picture of Sandy (our Weimaraner).
Nice Dog! How old?
Oh flipping hell, I just got it right to post a picture. Diana, you won't believe this but one of your postings, I think your first day in Sub A, I tried to open the picture but it was a Windows XP resizing program which I have just used to resize and post this picture. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Well now I will be spending the rest of tonight resizing and posting pictures.
Mike I think she is about 7 years old, not too sure (the Alzheimer's again) :36_2_35:
There is someone here in Kimberley that breeds with them if you are interested. You couldn't get a better family dog than Sandy. (Sorry Sandy B, not talking about you, named my dog after my best friend when she left Kimberley at the same time we got the dog. My friend Sandy now lives in CT and has my dog's sister which she named Amber.)
Terrible photo of me but a lovely one of my black child lying on my chest while I am fast asleep.
Oops, here's the photo
How'd you do that Florrie? Sleeping and posting at thev same time....
:36_2_35:
George, women are very good at multi-tasking.

I will never understand women, sleeping and doing things at the same time, that scares me....are they all witches ???? meanpuff
Georgswa, we have evolved to be able to do this because as the women in the home, we have to think and do everything for all the other members of the household, especially the men.

I think that was all agreed when standing in front of the priest, he said will you do all that, you must have said yes....Why ???
Now dont complain .... meanpuff :36_2_35:
You are wrong, the priest didn't say will you find everything for your husband after you have told him exactly where it is and he still can't see it right in front of him. In fact, there is a looooooong list of things I do that wasn't mentioned by the priest.

You see, thats the problem with the girls, they want to hear all in detail. You must read between the lines what the priest said, and beleive me that was strong words, at least thats what i understood. bling1
The never ending story....

Hi there Mike
Looks like you and I both had terrible weeks!!! I had to have my german shepherd, Raisha put to sleep on Tuesday gone by. Well, I have not stopped crying. I have the tendency of making my pets part of my household and boy, oh boy, when something happens to them it knocks me off my feet. Unfortunately these things always happen when hubby is away and I have to make the difficult decision.
She was 12 years old and needless to say, the hips starting packing up. She was also busy going blind and at times she would just collapse. I decided to take this step, because if I had to wake up one morning and she passed away on her mattrass in my room, I would surely go completely crazy. I still have my 5 dachshunds (4 miniature and 1 standard dachsie). The youngest of the lot used to sleep ontop of Raisha, used her as a mattrass. Well, my animals all get cremated and the ashes and photos are kept in a special corner of my home. Some people think I am mad, but if you are a geniune animal lover, you never forget them. They are on loan to us, no guarantee that they will walk with us all the way. I have a couple of sayings which I would like to share with dog lovers:
Dogs are not our WHOLE life, but they make our lives whole.
All knowledge, the totality of all questions and all answers, is contained in the dog.
Util he extends his circle of compassion to include all living things, man will not himself find peace
They are better than human beings - because they know - but do not tell
Every boy should have two things: a dog and a mother wiling to let him have one
A dog has the soul of a philosopher
Thou art true and honest as a dog
A dog is like an eternal Peter Pan, a child who never grows old and who therefore is always available to love and be loved
I hope if dogs ever take over the world and they choose a king, they don't just go by size because I bet there are little dogs with some good ideas
There is something to be said at how quickly a dog makes friends in comparison to a human
Don't always keep your dog on a leash if you want him to be attached to you
Cheers
Charmain
hi charmaine, very sad to hear of your loss,as a dog lover myself,i feel for you, take comfort in the fact that you and the family no doubt had many memerable moments with your beloved pet, think of all the good times, the funny things the dog would do to make you and the family laugh.as you say, they are great companions, they give all and expect nothing ,love and kindness goes a very long way.keep the happy memories, take care, bobby xx
I feel for all of you. I hate going to this topic as it makes me sad.You don't want to be around when my German Sherpherd goes to the big kennel in the sky to befriend Dollar and Raisha.
:emot78: cheers To all our furry Best Friends.
Sorry to hear about your loss Charmain..... I can indeed relate...
For Mike and Charmaine and all pet lovers who feel the loss
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
Ok now you made me go all mushy inside .. the doggie parlour sent that little bit of precious to me after my yorkieboy Byron had to be put down .. I was inconsolable cos I blamed myself as I was not observant enough to keep the little lionhearted creature who thought rottweillers were a snack out of trouble .... indeed the song " bright eyes" from Justin Hayward comes into here as well ...
Was'nt Bright eyes sung by Art Garthfunkel in Watership Down, another great book!
Brighteyes ,, Quite right .. watership down .. the little rabbit who was fey and see the destruction and persuaded a lot of them to move .. .. I have watched to movie quite a few times and yes I will play on words .. I was moved ...
I used to call Byron my little brighteyes ..
I read the book, then saw the animated version of it... always found that song Haunting!
After my Jenna had to be put down last year (told you guys how I used up a whole box of tissues in the vet's rooms - and he know's by now that he has to keep an extra box at hand just for Dalene) they also sent me a card with the most beautiful story on it - took me about an hour to read the one page :emot78:
Thank's for sharing like this, you lot.
Hi Bobby and the rest of the Crowd
Thanks for your kind words. One last thing I forgot to mention on my previous post:
The most beautiful thing about a dog: Their love is unconditional!!!
Charmain
Dollar would tick (excuse the pun) me off on many occasions...I would should at him and no matter what,he would always be my mate....
Hi all the Dog Lovers
Tuesday gone by it was a week ago that Raisha was put to sleep. I just have to share this with all you animal lovers. My standard Dachshund, Astro, (he is a giant in comparison with the miniature dachsies, weighing a solid 17.5 kg) has taken over the role of Raisha in the household. At the present moment he is lying next to me here at the computer whilst I am on the site. Funny, all the places where she lay while I was busy doing something, be it doing embroidery on my machine or cooking in the kitchen he has taken over. Raisha never moved away from me, no matter where I was and at night she would go and lie on her mattrass in my room once she saw me changing into my pajamas.
These are the most wonderful creatures God put on earth. Although they cannot speak, their behaviour is incredible.
Charmain
So are you getting a new best friend then Michael.
I think we might be getting to her...... apparently the German Shepard is way too big.... she might go with a staffie..... but I want my Dollar back!
iknow Don't even want to think about when my Zak's time comes. bighug
Hi Mike
Just to let you know I will be getting a new addition to the family soon. Waiting for the litter to be born. This time round I shopped on the net and eventually got the name of a good GSD breeder at Grehenheim kennels at Kameeldrift just outside of Pretoria. The stud dog that I fancy's name is Fabius, a beaut. His hips are classified A+, so that plus the fact that his offspring must have a placid nature are the most important points. As soon as I get the pup, which will most probably be around May, I will post some pics on the site. I really hope you get a "new best friend" soon. It is incredible the emptiness that stays behind.
Charmain
PS The GSD pups cost around R3 000, I dont care, even if they cost R20 000, I want one!!
Nooooooo! Life ain't fair....Michele are you reading this?
beautiful
I absolutely agree, they are the best.
I was never keen on GSD but my neighbour had one and he really was a fantastic dog. He sounded so vicious but when you were inside, he was so lovable. Make sure you get one from a good breeder that knows his dogs personalities. Can't wait to see the pictures of the puppy. Mike I can also enquire about a Weimaraner puppy for you if you are interested. I can keep the puppy for you untill you come to Bloem to watch the Cheetahs and you can take her home with you.
I have a GSD in my opinion the only dog to have. They very good with their own families,Zak is wonderful with Morgan and I believe it's the way you treat and bring your dog up as to how he behaves. (Not locked up in the back garden).Anyway I'm sure there are many stories to be told about these dogs, some not so good.So this is just my opion on the matter.I've always had a GSD in the house "stinky poo" but then I chose to have them and they should be part of the family.
Mike
If ever you come to Pretoria, let me know and if you are still looking for a GSD pup I will take you to the breeder where we are getting our pup. I spoke to her again today and we will be visiting the breeder around the middle of April when hubby is home from Iraq for his month's break. I know that I will be feeling horrible, standing there infront of the litter and just taking one and not the whole bloody lot!!! I must admit, if I had the money I would love to live on a plot and just look after any animal that has no home. Tell Michele she must get you another best friend.
Diane
I fully agree with you, a GSD is a wonderful family dog, it wants to feel part of the family and will do anything to protect its people. I would rather live with a 100 dogs than with human beings.
Charmain
hello - we got a new addition to the family yesterday ---- 6 month old Doberman. Very quiet and it is great with my two boys.
Seems a bit big for it's age, will need plenty of excercise , so hopefully it will motavate me get up off my fat arse and get some excercise.
Hi Claire! Did'nt you guys also have a doberman when you lived here, I can't remember....
Hi Mike - yip we had a crazy one in 2nd ave that scared the life out of me. She calmed down after her first set of pups.
The another one when we moved to 16th ave, and a deaf bull terrier. Then a rotweiler cross after that.
But this is the first time that I've got a dog, I've either been living in a flat or working to much. But now that Frank my husband is at home all the time now ( due to unemploment) we decided it would be a good time. Didn't think it was right in the past to have a dog when everyone was at work. My two boys are 1 and 4 - so just at the wright age - I hope.
Hope this dog ain't as crazy.... and enjoy it!
well said diana,no such thing as a bad dog,bad owners YES,dogs are more intelligent than we give credit for.why is it that when a family dog dies ,we all miss them so much, they are a very important part of our daily lives.in om i was given a dog by my parents,he was a heinz 57,called him sandy, cos he was the colour of the dunes.from the word go,he hated all things with wheels, seen a grand many of misshaps with ovambos and others passing our house at e23/9th ave[near the ovambo toilets and the park]sandy in chase trying to bite the tyres, given the chance,i think he would chase parked cars,ha ha
Will be getting one of these puppies from this litter in two weeks from now, thay are only 5 weeks old at the moment...Born in Cape Town......an international puppy.... now I must just think of a name... a really cool name... maybe Koos? I just don't know... need to see him first...
What about Seamus??? (pronounced Shay-mus)
I'll add it to the collection, I fancied Comet for some strange reason....
Pilot is close to Comet and also a nice name. Don't want to pee on your battery Mike but those puppies in the pictures just don't look that happy and well-cared for, maybe the photos are just not good?
I think the way they look, scruffy would be the name for me,
also if not well cared at the moment, mike will look after them for sure to become a good friend.
I like Seamus .. the nice celtic ring to it ... its like I called my yorkieboy Byron .. I got him from the SPCA he looked like nothing but after 2 baths and grooming there emerged a full size Yorkie as they used to be before they were bred down to the minaturised things they are now .. he must have been a throwback cos you dont see many around that size 6+ Kg anyhow he got the name cos of the proud way he carried himself like a little aristocrat so named after Lord Byron ... I like giving animals human names it gives them so much more diginty .. Tina was named after Tina Turner cos of her tangle of blonde hair ....
The guy who is the go between the puppies has known me for 4 years, he even came to my house 3 years back for a braai and met Dollar, he knows what I am looking for and is adement that the bloodline is of tone of the highest qualities in ZA, the father is a champ dog in ZA and there are papers coming with the dog to prove it... the dog will also have the "Tatoo" to prove the authenticity of the breed!
Sounds good, like Georg snr said, a bath etc and you won't be able to recognise him. My friend got a cat that looked terrible, I thought she was mad to take such a scruffy cat when there were so many cute ones for sale but after excellent feeding and grooming, her cat turned out quite beautiful.
I thought the puppies were cute. Got my Zak from a squatter camp, the vet said he'd be about the size of a collie. Well he turned out to be a handsome 40kg GSD.With a lovely nature. Michael as long as he/she has a strong name,GSD's or do not have woesy names . I kinda like that Shaymus name.
Hey Mike - the masses have voted and so far we have three who want the new addition named Seamus........... Go on, you know you like it
Mike, i see you have the upper hand, so sorry Michelle. Good luck when you get him/her and remember me bitching not so long ago when we got our puppy. Remember it doesnt last forever and it gets better.
Hi Mike - what about calling the dog RORY....
The name Seamus is of Irish origing, male and means "supplanter" (Whatever that means)?
Nope.. I had a Rory in mY Class at Highschool.... I like Comet.....
idontknow
after checking the pictures of the pups mike, ive come up with two names, smudge and mitch, keep us posted mike, cheers
Comet - big fireball thing in the sky with a tail trailing behind it. That accurately describes the new pup in full speed going through your garden. Good choise, Mike!
Smudge sounds cool also... this ain't gonna be easy.....
beautiful
That name is descriptive of the stripes and splash mark the pup's poo leaves behind on the stoep after you have stepped in it.
Yep - the choise is getting to be real hard for you.
Mike
Are you taking a male or a female? This has an effect on the name I want to post
Charmain
Michael I'm not sure, but do you already have a dog?
Where are the pics?
It's a male... he is arriving on Monday..... What about SIMBA! ?
That was the brand of chips ... why not 'Crinkel cut' ... laughpoint My favorite is Smduge!
iknow - what about Mate - it's simple :gum1:
Magnus?
If it's an Alsasion yopu should call im Harras. Pronounce it like you were speaking Afrikaans. That'd be close....
bling1
A short firm name will be good you don't want to be calling "Finkelstein, here boy,Finkelstein get your ass over here"
bling1
Hamish - that could be a good one specially after a few beers laughpoint
Not Simba, too obvious. How about Daxx? My son named his cat Daxx, got the name off a playstation 2 game, was a very powerful army or something like that. Daxx is easy, short and strong.
SMUDGE,you know you like it mike
I like it... but the missus don't.... anyhow she gave me the dosh to buy the furry thing.... maybe I first have to see it to decide on the name....
Ha! Ha! Ha! what about ''furry thing''
Howzat ,Florrie I was also thinking Dax.
Partner in Spar's middle name is DAX
I awoke this morning with the name Sparky.....
Sparky the Alsasion?
:emot19:
This dog needs a name to make it sound more superior.
Maybe Lord? meanpuff bling1
What about Clint or Brutus???
No! No! No! wait I have it - as he is arriving on Monday; why not call him 'Patrick'; 'Paddy' or even 'St. Pat'; my preference would be St. Pat....
bravo - that would be good
bravo
That's a good one Rhona....
Sparky is a small dog's name. How about Brutus? My son suggested Max. When you are cross with him you can call him Maximus.
Sorry Sparky and all the Patrick's are not German Shepherd type names, maybe for a Duschund. e154 to all you Irish out their.
I remember Mike Burgess calling his dog Rommel!
Always amused me this, as Mike was a Military type....
Rommels good
Yep, but thats Mike's dog's name.... Quick quiz: Who's dogs were called Zeus and Apollo? Anyone?
From Magnum
YEs, that show, but who were the dog's owners?
That guy with the two Rotties, silly.
How about a German name seeing as it is a German Shepard, Hitler or Jagermeister. Or the Celtic god of laughter, Angus. Or Apollo, Pluto, Blaze or Bandit.
It was not Magnum and it was not Higgen's, then who was it?
iknow - Robbin Masters
bravo a true child of the 70's and maybe the early 80's.... yougogirl
I think you've decided Mike.
Magnum!
That's it.
Sounds big and superior. Just bperfect for a German Shepard. And yet very cosmopolit.
meanpuff bling1
ZACK is the best name mike
Hiya Koos; we've missed you.......
DON'T CALL HIM KOOS!!!!! thumper thumper thumper
:emot19:
how about ZIM .
ZIM ZIM ZIM COME HERE MY FAITHFULL DOG.
now that sounds really nice.
iknow
Hi to all.........what about Spider....i love that name for a dog.......we had alsations called Flame and Wolf..
Who would have thought finding a name for the new puppy would cause so much interest! We have been throwing a lot of names around and have a lot of favorites but are hoping that once we see the puppy we will be able to decide.
Mike was watching CCR's dvd earlier today and one of their song titles is ? Shadow. Mike was always referring to Dollar as his Shadow as he would follow him everywhere and I think it is a good name for a German Shephard.
"Come here Shadow!"
Any support out there?
:emot112_2:
I like the name shadow, go for it, thats the name to go for
SHADOW - good name for a loyal GS
bravo yougogirl
Well.... Me is bending towards shadow.... 2morrow, when we see the mutt 4 the first time... we will know...
yesno
Of course Zack is the best name Koos, thats what my German Shepherd is called.
SHADOW mmmm I like that,and it's NOT a mutt.
I just rediscovered this topic...... wow! guys and gals! how time flies..... dollar is but a memory, a good one at that..... shadow sits right now, next to me, with that bloody orange bone in his mouth......,,,, come play, come play..
but above all... with the age of this topic, the path We have followed.... we have that Oranjemund spirit here.... that Oranjemund support.....
I thank you all..... I owe you all a hug.... and yes! plenty of beers.... and a 5lt for auntie diana....
I echo that ... just spent the birthday with my oldest bro Peter .. he now 66 ... he a tricky bugger emotionally quiet withdrawn and not able to express joy or pain to others .. .. not quite like me .. open and to the point .// but with me he can and yes we love each other .. him oldest .. staunch conservative .. me youngest .. totally different and a free thinker .. strange but true .. it boils down to a mutual respect for each other ... we always share a fat cigar before parting ... I got home and theres my two furry children .. Tina .. then Morag scotty teenage slut at the moment .. I just lay down on the carpet in the lounge and allowed them to run all over me lick me and fight over attention .. crooning .. moaning .. all the noises of appreciation that our animal children can emanate .. I feel whole again ... the dollars .. the patches , the jessicas .. the Byrons .. the so many names of pets that pass .. . there is a story of a vet who was called upon to help a family pet pass on .. he arrived at the house .. did the deed .. the parents were distraught .. but their son was quite composed.. the vet asked him why he was so calm about it .. so the boy matter of factly told the vet that human beings have to live a long life on this earth to enable them to learn the true meaning of love .. whereas our animal friends know from birth the meaning of love therefore they dont have to live that long on the face of this earth ... oops lump in throat ,,,
Thanks Sandy...... :emot112_2:
@ Sandy - you right, BIG lump in throat..........wise boy that - reading a book at the moment - channeled messages from spirit guides - when asked re the purpose of the human/animal relationship - the guides' reply?
"animals have such a loving and accepting way about them and they are given to you humans to teach you about true unconditional love and respect because in having a 4-legged addition to your family, regardless of what kind of 4-legged addition, it brings another dimension of love, understanding, patience and respect for other individuals than just humans. So there is a great reason for them to be part of your human life".
Too true ...
Anybody in Cape Town interested in a new best friend? I'm helping to look for a good home for a (SPCA) St Bernard called Max; 8 years old a real sweetheart. His owners are relocating to the UK and are desperate!
If I didn't have my Zak...yes. I'll ask around.
Old Oranjemunders, Ken and Maggi Dixon, who now reside in Rosh Pinah are looking for a new dog to adopt, there one died recently, however a St Bernard would not agree with the hot temp in Rosh Pinah.... cuqui
Thanks all; much appreciated!
Cherry,
Which branch of SPCA, we are well known at Grassy Park.
Hi John,
Sorry should have been clearer; he's ex-SPCA and not a pure breed.
