I only remember the LIssers having a Citroen, we used to call it the Shark car.

tar road started just before the road joined the N7, at kolmanskop I think ?  We would have a count down to hitting the tar and all clap, no more dust and rattling

We always stopped at Bitterfontein I think, it was closer to the main road.

It generally took 12 ish hours, but we were travelling during the years of fuel restriction.
The petrol stations were closed early, and the speed limit was very much enforced, we even had a spped control button in the car, my mom was the speed freak, and we had to wait for dad to doze off.

Of course if you broke down - you'd wait hours, and then if it was over lunch time - no help until 2pm in Springbok.

What era where the Peugot's from, those one's that rise when you drive them?

Thats the Citroen you talking about. The first of the type already in the 60th.

DS 19 DS 21 or so

Most modern car of its time, could drive with 3 wheels and very comfy.....

@ Barbara. The tar road which was the N7 started at Steinkopf, where those dome shape houses were, just as you turned right onto the N7 , a little way down was a Teeny weeny garage and shop on the left. We also had that speed control thingy thought we were so larney. I can tell you where the loo is in every single town on the way to Cape Town,as you say besides stopping to klap 5 kids,my poor dad had to contend with me wanting to wee evry 5min.
