So I was having a read on the net (followed one of the links on this forum). In the article I was reading the author was talking about having visited Oranjemund in the early 70's. There he mentions visiting the old scrapyards and seeing old steam loco's in the yard. I was wondering if those loco's would still be there (if the good old sea air has not eaten them away). Why I ask is I know someone through my grapevine that is a preservationist of these kinda thing and I am sure he would love to get his hands on something like that to restore.

So if any of the folk that work or use to work on the mine know anything about this, could you drop me a line.... :)

Gordon Brown

All locos used to transport personnel to work and the gravel concentrates from the the field screening plants to the Heavy Media Separation Plant were diesel driven units. Never once saw a steam driven one; scrapped or otherwise.

Railway line ran from the Mine store yard out onto the mine.
As Gordon says all Locos were diesel driven.
Concentrate from the plants was discharged from wooden lamtico bins into open Cocopans and trammed to No 4 Plant to the Railway bins , discharged there and sent into the recovery. (Those bins are still there)
Locos were serviced on the mine and the old loco shed is still there, where the driver training takes place in the 4 plant area.

Thanks gents, I did a bit of emailing around.... This is what I got.

Hi David, no that is not true .................CDM never had steam trains or either steam powered engines. They had small diesel power trains which were used for the transportation of materials from the mine store to Uubvlei. Even these trains have been sold many many years ago.

Hi,

Not as far as I know and I have asked a few people here at Uubvley, Balle says maybe in town at the old Loop Rd Scrapyard.
The best guys to ask could be Khon-Khon or Johan Weber at Waste.

Cheers
