Thanks Joyce for the snaps, some of the old timers might recognise a face or two.... I have included Joyce's comments here...

"I have attached some old photos I found whilst clearing out boxes recently. I lived in O'mund from December 1953 to September 1961. We had an awesome bunch of youngsters living there then. What a pity it was only the parents who owned cameras in those days.

            1.         An aerial view of my end of town. The street closest is11th Avenue. The house we lived in is just out of the picture on the right.

The last house on the left hand side is where the Creedy's lived.  Diagonally opposite are the 2 blocks of (Daily Paid's) single quarters with the laundry in between. To the left of them is the Recreation Club and behind that the swimming pool. On the extreme top left corner is Casey's Pub and further up the road is the community hall where we all went to Sunday school and where our 'Bop Sessions' were held. Alongside that was the park and behind were the tennis courts and you can just see the cooling towers of the power station.
A photo of the entrance to the new general store. It was a vast improvement on the old one.

2.         Top Left : John Heilman and Anne van Niekerk outside Anne's house. Sadly Anne passed away suddenly on Christmas Eve last year.

            Top Right : Lyn Barnes

Bottom : My, how the school had changed when I visited in the late 60's. So many extra classrooms had been built. There used                 to be oak trees down both sides of the driveway.

3.         Top left : Egmond (Iggy/Van) van Greunen & Pat (my sister) (nee Cummings) on their wedding day in 1960. Van passed away in Oranjemund in the late 70's. He had been very involved with the Karate club.

Top Right : Elsie Cummings having a turn at lifting the head of the very dead Leopard that had been roaming the desert close to town.

Middle : Van & Pat's Best Man (Dave ?) and Bridesmaid (Irene ?) with Elsie & Vic Cummings – our parents. And in the background is Agatha Robson.

Bottom : My nephew  Carl van Greunen at about 9 years old. Sadly Carl Passed away on Jan 12th this year after a battle with         Leukemia.

Some of my class mates besides Anne van Niekerk were: Tony Hockney, Clive Gilmour, Barry Everaud; Gary Wilson, Edward ?( the doctors son) , Leila Austin, Michael Creedy, Christine Wright, Lilian Smith, Gladys Young, ? Grigg – Patricia's brother, Mary Mead, Lorraine Coetzer,  I suppose if I sit and think long enough I'll remember a whole lot more. Clive used to tell the most chilling ghost stories in class with Tony and Barry doing most of the sound effects. I wonder who else can still remember those!

Best regards and thanks for all the effort you put into Oranjemundonline.

Don't remember Carl but the face rings a bell, we were both in Std 1 in 1971. Very sad that he has passed away, still quite young.

Hi Joyce
Well, well.  Long time no hear of.  Leila and I were talking about you a few weeks ago and I look forward to seeing the picture that you talk about in the email to Mike.  where art thou now?  I spent literally hundreds of hours with Van in the karate club and was there last Sept.  Will email you seperately.  Imagine hearing about Barry E and Clive.

Great pics and wonderful to have somebody to enrich us with more memories of early Oranjemund!  Hope to here some more tales of the days!
