Are there any health risks associated with smoking a h.b. pipe containing fruit stuff?

@ Janet - According to CANSA (the cancer association of SA) it is just as harmful to smoke "hubbly bubbly" as smoking cigarettes.

The stuff that is burned and then inhaled contains a lot of different toxins known to cause medical problems, including Carbon monoxide, heavy metals and other known carcinogens (chemicals that cause cancer).

Medically in general this method of smoking increases heart rate, raises blood pressure, and decrease lung function which can lead to pulmonary disease - or worse, the big Ca. You are also 5x more likely to get gum disease and oral cancer.

People say they don't cough so much as cigarette smokers do, so it must be safer - NOT true - the only reason the effect seems to be better on the lungs, is because of the water vapor inhaled with the smoke.

As a medical herbalist my advice - if you want a special effect, rather make a nice herbal tea - probably not as "cool", but definitely much safer (depending on the specific herbs in your tea mix!)  weed  ha ha

Hope this helps!  Thanx for starting the topic, Janet.  See, you're already an expert on navigating the site and actively being part of the Oranjemund family - isn't it lekker?!

I have always been trying to warn people of the risks of Hubbly, everyone said it was safe...anyhow, whilst in CPT, I read page 6 of the Argus on Monday 11th May 2009.... there is a big article on the dangers, I cut the article out and brought it back to Omund with me... to show the Non Believers... and now I will scan it in here before the weekend....

I know a lot of people won't agree with this but i bought my daughter one about a year ago - we have an open enough relationship for her to tell me that she was smoking hubb with her friends if it was around - it's a big thing with the teenagers in cape town and i know i cannot police her 24/7 to make sure she doesn't do it just by me saying she's not allowed to.  When she first asked me for one, i said no, thinking that if i bought her one, it would be like condoning what sometimes goes with it, i was also worried of the illegals that might go with it (remembering what we used to get up to with a hubbly). Anyway, after her going on about i thought about it.........she's a sensible child with a good head on her shoulders and good self esteem.......i decided that if she is smoking, that i'd rather have her doing it at home under my supervision.  Of course i warned her about the dangers, ie. never to smoke with people she doesn't know 'cos you don't know what's in there, etc. In the beginning it was a novelty having her own with her and her friends doing it often but she found that it gave her migraines and after a while she did it less and less.  Her hubb is now lying at a friend's house and she's actually stopped out of her own.  She feels the migraine that comes afterwards is just not worth it.  So yah, if we make something taboo, it just makes it that much more exciting with them wanting to do it at all costs.  Take away the excitement of doing it behind parents backs and the novelty soon fades.

HOOKAH hazards worse than cigarettes.;;letter in THE ARGUS May 15,2009. Last week, I learnt of a 2 yr old child who is allowed to smoke a hookah by his parents. The use of hookahs by youth has become increasingly common.Teens think it is cool and parents think it is not harmful- neither belief is true.Hookah smoke is similar to cigarette smoke- it contains the same deadly chemicals, like nicotine, carbon monoxide and cancer-causing tars. The water in the hookah pipe does not remove these poisons.Smoking a hookah daily may be the same as smoking 10 cigarettes a day.Hookah smoking also carries many of the same health risks as cigarette smoking, like heart disease and cancer. And because the mouthpieces are shared with others, users are at risk for infectious diseases, such as TB,hepatitis, herpes. It is time to unhook children, teenagers and adults from the harmful hookah. For free helpin quitting tobacco call 011 7203145. .....DR YUSSUF SALOOJEE<EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR,NATIONAL COUNCIL AGAINST SMOKING JOHANNESBURG.,,,,,,,,,,, I thought that mite be of interest to some members on the forum.
