'Curry basher' killer jailed

MELBOURNE - THE man found guilty of kicking to death a university researcher while on a 'curry bashing' excursion has been jailed, said Australian media on Wednesday.

John Caratozzolo reportedly laughed after viciously kicking the head of his dying victim, Dr Zhongjun Cao. Dr Cao, 41, was set upon and killed by a gang of seven youths as he walked home from Victoria University in Footscray, Melbourne, in January last year.

Supreme Court Justice David Harper said Caratozzolo, 20, suggested to his mates that they go "curry bashing" - meaning targeting and robbing Indians - because he needed a new mobile phone, reported the Herald Sun newspaper.

However, when the group saw Dr Cao walking alone, they attacked him without warning, assaulting him "for pleasure" without even asking for his phone.

One of the group dropped Dr Cao on his head during the attack and as he lay badly injured. Caratozzolo launched a kick at his head as a parting gesture.

After the fatal bashing the group went on to attack another man, an Indian student.

Dr Cao's widow Jingfang Zhou spoke of her love for her husband and the void his death had left in the lives of herself and their teenage daughter.

Justice Harper said Caratozzolo's racially-motiviated actions struck at the heart of the entire nation.

"Everyone in this city, in this state, and in this country - everyone whatever their gender, race or beliefs, has the right to walk the streets without fear," he said. "You have diminished the quality of life of us all."

Caratozzolo pleaded guilty to murder and robbery. He was jailed for 15 years with a minimum of 10 years

I still believe in the death sentence for this type of crime and if the truth is known, so would most other law abiding citizens. The trouble nowadays, is that the courts are far too lenient when it comes to handing down prison sentences. A life sentence should mean what it says, for life not a short time inside and be out after say ten years.

Agreed Mike, all the way to the gallows, the guilotine and the electric chair... as cruel as they sound... you should get what you give... NO MERCY for premeditated assault and/or murder.

Violent crimes have become an everyday occurance in Sothern Africa, armed robbery (3 in 2weeks)  in Cape Town's biggest shopping mall. Hijacking, house breaking, violent rape, murder for as little as a cell phone... the list goes on and on and on... you can vote for who you like, the numbers aren't there to make a difference. Many of the majority party cry about the conditions and current situation on news broadcast over the world yet, next elections they'll vote for the same crowd that put them in the predicament they're in, and then still blame the whole shamboozled mess on the oppressive pre '94 boertjie government.

The world needs to wake up and see the mess that it is allowing and sometimes encouraging to evolve.

Hate crimes of this  type  are despicable ...  we all have a place in the sun.. but yes  some yobbos  think differently , taking their personal  failure in society  out on  other people who  only want to work  and yes  in doing so contribute to the  very same tax base  that supports  these miscreants .. the punishment should be of the harshest magnitude to send a clear messsage ..

Mike I have no idea how we should deal with these individuals (Hang Shoot Behead Execute them) how the hell can we as a civilized species even understand their behaviour.

Murder is bad manslaughter is bad this is nonsensical I can not comprehend, it makes my blood boil to the point that puts me in that position I would go and do the same to them.

Then doe's that make me the same as them for wanting retribution !! we have a couple of posts at the moment LIFE AFTER DEATH and END OF DAYS well the fist one there I personally think not .

I would like to believe it so knowing that all these B******* from Hitler Stalin etc etc would get some sort of punishment but sadly I think not.

I remember the film THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION and the character that Morgan Freeman played when he was in front of the review board, if you saw the film you will no what he said.

I Honestly believe they should be locked away with hard labour for the rest of their days and we as society will have to cover the cost in keeping them there.............................................................

Also believe in the death penalty and cannot comprehend the light sentances handed out here in the UK.Also the 'human rights ' that these monsters claim!!! and get!!! British justice.........there is no such thing!!!! oh don't start me off .......it makes me so mad!!!!!!child molesters....also death penalty......there is no cure for that!!!! they get a year if that here.......disgusting
