Well, I heard that today, SAMETAL, start to remove all the scrap that was dumped over the decades in the town scrapyard, the big one situated next to town garage, between town and the salt pan.

About 20 years ago, the powers that be, had the entire scrapyard, covered over. Today, you can still see pieces of cars and trucks sticking up through the surface....

Anyhow, this brings me back to a topic that we covered on this forum about 2 years ago...

WHAT HEALTH RISK DO THOSE ASBESTOS FILLED CHIMNEY STACKS POSE? You know the ones that were dumped there from the old power station, parts of the stacks are exposed and the fibers are blowing over the town, thanks to the prevailing southerly wind......

Has anyone informed SAMETALS and the towns residents of the severe health risks of this operation..... I somehow doubt it......

I am not going to cover the topic again, but will search for the link to the pics.....

The whole asbestos thing will be removed by specialist asbestos removal. Asbestos is not something to play with and is very prevelant in the Northern Cape especially in the FInsch, Griquastad, Postmasberg and surrounding areas where it is found natuarally. The comon semi precious stone tigers eye is compressed asbestos, so never fear I am sure the powers that be have checked and sorted the removal of the asbestos and am sure environmental dep is also checking very carefully.
