Johannesburg - Free State Cheetahs scored 11 tries to crush Mpumalanga Pumas 80-16 Saturday in a Currie Cup match that created several records this season.

It was the highest points total by a team in the 2011 South African championship, easily surpassing the 53 scored by the Golden Lions against Platinum Leopards.

The 64-point margin overtook 38-point margins by the Lions at Griqualand West and Western Province at Leopards.

Forwards scored seven of the Cheetahs tries with eighthman Johannes 'Boom' Prinsloo scoring three and replacement prop Marcel van der Merwe a brace.

Prop WP Nel and flank Pieter Labuschagne were other forwards to dot down with the other tries coming from Philip Snyman, Tewis de Bruyn, Corne Uys and Riaan Smit.

Fly-half Sias Ebersohn (seven) and replacement Johan Goosen (four) converted all the tries and the latter also landed a long-range drop goal for the home team who led 28-6 at half-time.

Victory lifted Cheetahs two places to fourth, six points behind leaders Golden Lions, while Pumas share bottom place with Leopards.
