Why Would he only admit it after his guide died?

"Edmund Hillary, conqueror of Everest, dies at 88
Edmund Hillary, the beekeeper from Auckland who conquered Mount Everest and went on to become one of the greatest adventurers of the 20th century, has died at the age of 88. Hillary, who reached the peak of Everest in 1953, only admitted being the first man to reach the top of the world's highest mountain after the death of his climbing companion, Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, in 1986."

i've read somewhere that for many years afterwards there was a dispute as to who of them actually sumitted first and they eventually agreed to say that they sumitted together.  we'll never really know now that they're both gone, will always be speculation - perhaps it was the sherpa who actually sumitted first and hillary knew it couldn't be challenged by him after his death. remember, hillary was "the main man" ie. the cash cow, and Norgay, merely the "packhorse" - no disrespect intended by that term - i have enormous respect for them and have often felt they've been exploited - without the sherpas, no-one would reach the summit.

I reckon Norgay got there first, although I was'nt waiting for them, so I can only speculate...it just sounds fishy.....

i agree - since reading about that dispute, i've always felt in my bones it was Norgay who put foot first - if that's the case, sad that he never got the recognition he deserved.
