Brownies and Girl Guides

My mom (Gladys Thurtell) was the girl guide commissioner (or whatever its called) in Oranjemund at some stage and I recall her and the Guides going on  a trip to Etosha, which was a major event in those days, seeing that one was locked in the town (until the off-weekends? memory fading). There was also a campout at Shephard's Neck (I think that'sw hat it was called - a camp area behind the hill near the garages on the north side of the river. My dad (Owen aka "Doc") taught them orienteering with a compass.

I was in scouts and we were taken for a campout to somewheer down the river where there is an old broken house on a hill overlooking the river - full moon and ghost stories made for a sleepless night. This was also a big event in those days being in a closed town.
