I was helping out on a private job around 1998, soon after the night club started up in the cinema building and had the sad task of removing all the electrics and sound equipment from the projection room upstairs and installing new for lighting, plugs etc. What technology for its time...

The new occupants wanted to turn it into an executive bar/lounge. I don't know if it ever got that far. I haven't been in there long enough since to find out.

Besides, I keep a healthy distance from the venue when it gets lively and jivey as the records will show, there have been a fair share of broken bottle attacks, knifings and even a fatal stabbing... what has the this place turned into???

Hopefully one day, yes one day, the big wheel will turn and sanity and tranquility will return...
All things electrical contain smoke. Making it come out is easy; getting it back in? ... yeah right!!!

We heard about the stabbing when we were there...  just hope they did'nt use the knife to serve another blokes steak to him right afterwards  (Here's a good sharp knife for you..   just been tested between someones ribs!)....  Ugh
Life becomes harder for us when we live for others, but it also becomes richer and happier. Friendship is a sheltering tree.

To be clever enough to get a great deal of money, one must be stupid enough to want it.

Wow!!!!! the Bioscope cinema.

When did Oranjemund get TV,

Because the First Man On The Moon was shown here in 1969, my oldest Sean was five years old (it was black and white film) and he said at the time he wanted to be a space man.

Well I think he achived that in later life but it had nothing to do with rockets, I think space cadets more like it.

2001 Space Odyssey Stanley Kubrick film was another film on at the Bioscope.

If you wanted tickets for the Saturday show you had to get them on Wednesday, thats if it was a good film, and I think there were two shows early and late.

One of my favorites also for the space music

Difficult to understand the film, time travel......at the end he returned as a baby....so far for Einstein and relativity theories

You asked the young o-munders......

Well i rathe belong to the old LOL
But Tv came mid to end seventies. We never had one.
Reception was bad until a repeater was installed in Alexbay

Those days Radioprograms and cinema along with many activities in town was our entertainment

TV has destroyed the old social life, nothing worse then visiting people that keep the TV running, read the paper and have conversation at the same time. All only superficial social relations novadays

On the other hand, TV teaches a lot, but watching the programs in SA and Nam, you may as well forget about it, its the worst i have seen in my life.

Videos and internet are the substitute.

Georg, you are corect. TV came to O/mund late 70's
I remember we gave my dad a small black and white TV for Xmas. (think it was 79)
He was quite pleased cause the reception on it was better than the coloured TV's their friends had.

Michael Alexander

I always belived the reception to be the same, however, the "snow" makes the picture looks worst on a colour tv.....

Always one person outside twisting the pole, with the other inside shouting, "Left....left.... no! Right, right..."

That sounds about right Mike... image201  In the beginning you used to base your TV viewing on the weather forecast in Cape Town as well. If Cape Town had good weather, OM had TV reception. They changed the transmitters later on and that solved the weather issues.

Diana Rudd (Boehme)

Television came to South Africa..January 1976.  The test pattern and snowy picture came to O'mund 1979 the year my son was born.
