The military drill helped you be a better artisan?

Yea Georg jnr. Being fresh out of school, most young men entering into the working world haven't got a clue about where they fit into the organization.
For 12 years you are told what to do at school and at home, and you basically just go along with it or face the consequences. Now you enter the working enviroment and reality hits you like a ton of bricks. Suddenly there are new rules and regulations. Breaking the rules here often results in far worse consequences than a hiding from your Dad or detention at school. Colleagues are usually much older than you and have wives and families already. Some come from different social and ethnic backgrounds. Being taught from the start where you fit in helps a lot in determining what kind of an artisan you are going to become one day. You basically get two types: The one who does the absolute minimum of what's required of him and lives from paycheck to paycheck with no ambition in life. Then you get the one who continuously strives to improve his skills and lifestyle, and goes the extra mile to ensure a pleasant working enviroment for him and his co-workers.

There is a posting from your Dad on the forum, where he mentions how the appies made fun of him behind his back for being so strict and authoritive. I bet those appies turned out to become top notch artisans in the end.

Too  true .. looking  back  the  strictness  helped  shape us .. there were  some  that  just plain took advantage of  their " authority " but   I can say  for  most  of our  senior  artisans and  trainers  , they  had good  intent  and  wanted us to  do  our  best  and become  the  best  that  we  could  be ..

Seriously though, its weird how a bunch of guys together can always manage to stray off a topic without really noticing it.

During our morning meetings at work the topic would always eventually end up below the belt. The foreman suggested that we keep it above the belt and rather talk about cars or something similar. It went well for a day or so untill one morning one of the guys adressed the meeting with : "Het iemand van julle al agter in 'n Mini gespyker?"

Never mind Boy Georg I've done that already,.......not so much about the wrong topic that happens all the time diffiult to stay on a topic  I know. I just felt that something as "important" for want of a better word, should be all together under the Appie topic so one can refer back to previous posts. (Way back to the beginning of the forum)

I was a trouble maker back in the day and always had my way of doing things, My first assigned place as an electrical appie was to 50g, the electrical shop.... when I got there all the old artisans were having tea, Gus was my foreman.... they told me to make their tea and coffee for them, even though there was a tea boy there. I do not drink tea or coffee and so I refused, I was not impressed by the way that they had asked me to , or should I say demanded me to,  and I knew that there was nothing they could really do from a legal point... I never ever did make the tea and coffee, I cannot remember if it Was Gus or Christie, that gave me a lecture about how things 'worked"    ...... sometimes it helped being a big lad........

I grew up with this guy in my back. There may be several things I still don't like about how he sees things and goes about them. But my oldman never used military drill. It's just a matter of expecting somebody to feel responsable about what he's doing or not doing. So there's a big difference to me.
