Mike Linux has made great progress with its operating system and will so into the future, it will become more user friendly but noticed you were having trouble with installing Skype........ plugging in the camera can bit of a headache

Linux is a great system if you have the time to play around with it we have it on another computer and have 'Ubantu' as the operating system and its great ........Like building a computer you can go out and buy all the parts and then assemble them plug in switch on and you have the satisfaction of seeing what you have assembled........ Doing it that way is good for  understanding the way they work. Or you can purchase one out of a box at half the price plus with the operating system already installed     2.7GHz AMD Athlon II X3 Triple-Core 425 Processor; 4GB Memory; ... Intel Core 2 Quad Processor; 8GB memory; 1 Terabyte hard drive; Windows 7 Home Premium. All that for around $800 Australian.

This is a quotation from a book by Archbishop Desmond Tutu in 1999.................................................................................................

A person with Ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed.

One of the sayings in our country is Ubuntu - the essence of being human. Ubuntu speaks particularly about the fact that you can't exist as a human being in isolation. It speaks about our interconnectedness. You can't be human all by yourself, and when you have this quality - Ubuntu - you are known for your generosity.

We think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole world. When you do well, it spreads out; it is for the whole of humanity.

Mike!! go for it you never know it might beat Microsoft in the end.............................................................. image04

I still go back to  the old saying .. " nothing in life is for  free "   free has its problems .. as I read  in between the lines here ... good on   those experimenting with it ,, your feedback to the writers  can most probably help get the glitches sorted out ... personally I  dont have time for that , sooner pay my licence and  as happens with a company that then  has commitment ( not that they too have had  their fair share of horrors like Vista ) but at least they comitted to supplying updates and patches ... and most systems seem agreeable to the "mighty bill gates " dont forget they were the originators of DOS   which  to my understanding is  still the basic platform upon which  most programs  operate  or communicate to ... that compared to some of the older clunky operating platforms ... but anyhow to you intrepid  explorers of the  free /open software  have fun .. you are  aprt of the pioneering spirit  of  it ...

Psst   a humerous  take  on  it all  >>>>>>>>>>>  at  least the  " windows "open  and I find  no shut doors

Michael its not what you know its who you know.

Fedora is an RPM-based, general purpose operating system built on top of the Linux kernel, developed by the community-supported Fedora Project and sponsored by Red Hat. The Fedora Project's mission is to lead the advancement of free and open source software and content as a collaborative community.

Slackware another stable release of Slackware is finally ready to go. Slackware 13.1 is available in both 32-bit x86 and 64-bit x86_64 editions, and brings with it many major improvements, like KDE SC version 4.4.3, the 2.6.33.4 Linux kernel, a new toolchain, updated libraries, and major applications such as Firefox and Thunderbird.                image04

Linuxmint is built on top of Ubuntu which is built on top of Debian which is built on top of the Linux Kernel.  sorriso2

Try it some day, very easy to use for someone who has only used MS Windows.
Never thought I would ever change completely to Linux but after trying Linuxmint Windows is history for me.

Linux has come of age...

I had me turn at Linux, Red Hat, Suse and puppy Linux, in fact my Laptop still dualboots into puppy , being only 99 megs in size with all the trimmings...

However, I still feels Linux still has a few years to go before it is 100% user friendly...
