People tend to forget the historical importance of the MDC, the forerunner to Debmarine....up until 1966, Debeers never believed that there were viable diamond reserves in the sea...Sam Collins and the MDC proved them wrong...... so in essence the photographs you are viewing are of historical importance, not just to Oranjemunders, but to the undersea mining industry today as the MDC and DEbeers are now world leaders in this specialised field of undersea mining....

The official name for "MS Peace" is actually Peace in Africa.... I was on board there at the beginning of the month, bumped into Owen Holland there, he is working as a Hydraulic Fitter there.

Thank you for the memory of the Pomona. My father "Doc" Thurte;; worked on the Pomona two weeks on one week off if I remember correctly. They use to fly by Dakota to Kopdoorn (Alex Bay) and then helicopter out to sea. He once had an accident needing a hopsital so they casevacced him to O'Mund hospital - and that's where we ending up living from 1969 on.
