Thinking about the old single quarters days.
Anyone remember the bizarre knife murder in the single quarters in the early seventies, with all the blood stains behind the appie college, and the corpse eventually found in the car buried somewhere behind the town garage.

We should compile a list of the known murders in Omund, it would make an interesting stat!   msn emoticon (224)

Vaguely recall something like this - Roger Burchell or Pete Shout may know something.

Is that not the same  murder  mentioned earlier on the site ??  sounds the same .. except car found in dumps and body in the river ...

I don't think so but not sure - the river one was Grant van Eeden - could be the same one though.

Richard Opperman

I think it is the same one ?
As Sandy mentioned dumps and river - it is the one mentioned some where on this site.

Life's journey is not to
arrive at the grave safely
in a well preserved body,
but rather to skid in sideways,
totally worn out, shouting
'..holy sh*t ..what a ride!

I think the one you are referring to happened in the late 70's. I can't recall the guys name who was murdered (think it was Reitz) but I worked with him as a mining supervisor at No.1 Plant and we called him "Vaaljapie". He had a drinking problem and had missed work on a few occassions due to over indulgence. Hugo vd Merewe was the Mine Foreman on his shift and Jackie Carr was SMF at the time. I do recall Hugo filing "complaint forms" against him on consecutive days, getting him up to a "Final Warning" before Roger Burchell called to let us know he'd been murdered. I can still see the look on poor old Hugo's face - white as the prverbial sheet and slumped back in his chair.
He was stbbed 37 times and then the seat belt was used to tie bricks to his body before being dumped in the river and the bakkie dumped behind the garage.

Yes I remember that murder too...   Does anyone know exactly why?   Think the murderer's surname was "Van Eeden"

image24  Well the one I remember where the person was stabbed and dumped into the river was the Van Eeden murder.  Especially the part that bricks were tied to his body...  But then I could also just be confused...  ha ha  Not impossible....

The murder mentioned here happened middle 1980, just before my arrival in Oranjemund. It is indeed the van Eeden case. The investigating officers in this case were At Louwrens and Elise van der Venter. Thanks to dr. Greig, this case was solved in almost no time as he reported a strange injury to the hand of van Eeden, wich led to discovery of blood stained clothes in a dustbin at their home.

My involvement stopped after transporting Grant van Eeden from Luderitz jail to Windhoek for his hearing in the Supreme Court.

Spot on  Eugene  .. it all falls into place .. mid 1980  just before i left O'mund .. i had bought a gun from  Dave Pearson  and had to go to the police station which was  then  moved to the old X ray  station .. and while there doing the documentation  I  saw  Grant .. cool calm and hello as if nothing had happened ..  bumped into him  about 4-5 years ago in woodstock  Roodebloem rd while walking down to the local  ... he was a free man and on the streets  and again  greeted  ewe so casual .. i could not  get enough distance  that night ... just kept on walking   past local  on pretext of visiting  friends down the road ...
