What a time . The things we got up to in the town in the school holidays.it was like a big play ground .THE freedom the space we could do anything we wanted.guess we got drunk everynow and then and started a fire here and there , It was all part of the risk and not being bored.
i would not change a thing. THANKYOU ORANJEMUND

Same here.  Being home in Oranjemund over the holidays were simply the best and I wouldn't change anything either.  Yes we were never bored.  How is it that kids in the city get bored with so much to do all around them - maybe the choices are too big and everything they can do costs money.  For us - going on a "camping trip" to the sea/pink pan/river/dunes/swimming pool/parties/Beauvallon were always FREE. And all our friends were in cycling/walking distance.  We were indeed lucky!  I echo you Paul - THANK YOU ORANJEMUND!

Myself......I've mentioned previously on this forum ,as teenagers from the 60's through to the 80's we all did and new the same things and got up to much the same sh*t. A realy great time of my life and I'm still house friends with quite a few of my teenage friends.
THANK YOU ORANJEMUND

If you think of it, we didn't spend much time indoors. We were always out and about and our parents knew that we were safe. Ok, they didn't know half of what really went on out there (thank God ...), but we were in a town where everyone knew and trusted each other. No one can understand the life we had without having shared it. It was unique. 'Oranjemund our desert school, with pride of thee we sing, tralalalala' ......

In our days, CDM would even organise free bus rides to the beach, up the river and now and again down to Port Nolloth/McDougals

You hit the nail on the head Diana and Patricia, best years of my life. I always say the 28 years I spent in Omd were the best, thank you oranjemund:-)

Oh hear, hear to all your comments.  Talking about the buses CDM used to put on; remember the "Woodstock" festival that they helped put on at the beach?  Sandy, you've got some pics - what a blast! And the concert they put on at the Yacht Club with Morning Glory playing after the teenage dance?  Such great memories!

Gerda Cloete

I was born there and left when I was 11.... best years of my life..

.... only thing that comes close is the year i went back after school. Worked in the bank and "joined" the appie clan of JAn Enslin, Athol Owen, Gus Buchanan, Heyman Kotze ect.... what a blast we had. Still think of them all the time....but then again... it was in Oranjemund.

@ Gerda, (Worked in the bank and "joined" the appie clan).
Hehe and I had a few sleepless nights wondering where you were and up to what. Maybe I worried cause I knew what I was up too in my single years.
Up to today I still wonder if my mom really thought I was such a good girl or is that what she choose to believe.
Do you remember our lunch times at the cafe?  We always ate the same thing every day and the one day we got there our food was already waiting for us. The waiter standing proudly cause he knew what we wanted. Funny thing is I can only remember I always drank a cola tonic with my meal.

To the rest of the "old folks".. do you remember how often we rolled up the carpets on a Friday or Saturday evening and had great house parties.
Shame my domestic helper always just shook his head and sighed .. knowing on Monday he will have to give the floor an extra layer of wax to remove the last of the party signs.

Talking about buses.  When it rained on a school day real hard, the mine would send the red bus to school to give us a ride home.  Imagine getting wet...

Stephanie Van Niekerk

John I remember the one year... We had hail (not sure of spelling).
We all went crazy as so many of us had never experience it before.
That was the first time I remember going home in a bus.
Wondering now what we did with our bicycles?
Although, we probably left them at school. Those years we did not know of something like theft.

Talking of theft. One year (early seventy's I think), There was an add in the newsletter.
Person mentioning that their hosepipe was stolen while they were on leave and he would like to know what was wrong with the other hosepipe cause it was not also stolen.

Malcolm Bertoni

I also heard about the hose theft and the ad in the newsletter.

I heard that it was one of the Dickson boys, but not too sure whether this is true or not.

Late 70's ..  I popped  into  the then  Barclays bank .. came out to find my Bright new  Le Jeune  bicycle missing ... It was returned  a day later  via being thrown over the  garden fence of  somebody  taken to  police station  station  where I went  to  claim it back ..  the joyrider  had had his fun ..     cat3
