hehehe! For years as a kid , I always thought that black pipe sticking up of the roofs was a chimmney, could never figure out how Father Christmas got down it, i think it was during one of my 17 year old drunken stupors on the roof , I realized........ That that was'nt a chimney....and the hardest part at that age was finding out that there was'nt a Father Xmas.....Sad!    :'(

The helicopter was the one that made the biggest impression, I still have'nt had a ride in it yet......

BILLY SUMMERS AND DOC GREIG, AND A FEW OTHER ORANJEMUNDERS, WERE WALKING THE FISH RIVER CANYON.  MYSELF AND ROY WENT UP IN THE PLANE TO SEND DOWN BEER AND WHISKY IN A LITTLE PARACHUTE WE MADE UP.  FLYING TO THE FISH RIVER CANYON ROY SAID TAKE THE CONTROLS SON WHILE I LIGHT MY PIPE.  HE TOOK THAT LONG TO LIGHT HIS PIPE - THERE WAS SWEAT ON MY BROW.  I KEPT LOOKING OVER MY SHOULDER IN CASE SOMEBODY OVERTOOK ME - THAT WAS THE LONGEST MINUTE OF MY LIFE!!!!!!  IN THE END, BILLY AND DOC FELL OUT WITH US BECAUSE WE DROPPED THE BEER AND WHISKY TO THE WRONG PEOPLE - OOPS!!!

During my years of unemployment, Doc Greig invited me to go and Hike the canyon with him, kinda make up the numbers, when we got to canyon, to my horror I discovered that you could not do the Hike without having had a medical examination..... "No worry!," , explained Big Gavin, whipped out my medical certificate.... funny thing was I never remember taking that medical exam.....   ;)

Mike ~ Was that the trip when Gavin or Jim (memory's fading) refused a ride in the chopper with us because of the embarrassment they would suffer finishing the hike in such a fashion, as opposed to walking into Ai Ais?  One of them had suffered a twisted ankle or suchlike and had collapsed in the shade of a small kiosk a few kilometres upstream.  (I think you had walked in ahead of them to seek assistance).  We landed to render assistance but they had no intention of accepting a lift and, so, we granted them their wish and returned to the skies.  This resulted in certain key members of your group sneaking their way into Ai Ais on the back of a farmer's bakkie which had been commandered for the occasion!  Talk about saving face!  You were definitely there and it was as hot as hell.

Pete, that was indeed the trip, Gavin was fine, but some overseas people(person) had sprained an ankle (or broken a leg), Gavin helped out and opted to stay with them and sent Wullie and myself out to phone you guys for help with the chopper.I think Dawn Jones was also there that weekend......

You guys made quite an impression with the tourists when you landed the squirrel next to the tennis courts, that I remember!  Oh and the draught was ice cold.....   ;D

Describing that as a landing was very kind of you, Mike!  I thought we'd run out of fuel and were simply trying not to wrtite ourselves off!  I wonder if any of those tourists realised how close they came to becoming Squirrel mascots!!

Thinking back, apart from the pilot there were two pax - myself and a guy from Nature Conservation.  Needless to say that, after our spectacular touch-down, the Nature Conservation guy did a bunk (he was obviously shattered) and we had to do the rest of the sorties on our own (me and the pilot...try to think who it was...will have to check out my photos).

We were actually doing a canyon clean up as it was the end of the hiking season.  I have never seen so much rubbish and filth generated by people who are, supposedly, environmentally conscious ~ which is why they walk the canyon.

I remember my dad wanted me to do the F/R/C I would have loved to have done it, I guess school and also my back but, no exscuse, I would have loved to have done it. I know Dr Gregs daughter, Julie and Nicole Latimer did it one year, boy i was so jeleous that I could not have done it. My dad always said that I would have been able to do it. Not sure about now though, the age is creeping up on me......

I visited Roy in England sometime in the late 70s or early 80s when he lived in Sheffield prior to his second stint in Omund, the twins were still very young cant guess thier age maybe 5or6 ,anyway I went flying with Roy from his flying club,so off we went buzzing around town let me take controls for a while. When we landed the instructer at the club house asked Roy if he had topped up the tank of the aircraft and he said it wasnt nessisary as there was half a tank in both tanks. The problem was they always showed half as the instrumentation was faulty so when checked we had landed on fumes. We both went for a stiff drink after that.
