Hey on the topic of Ms Urie,

she was a real old school dragon.  My Gawd, she was horrid.

I ws on duty in casualty at the Victoria Hospital one night in about 85 or therabouts, and in the midst of all the mayheim I spotted Joan and Joan (Ms Urie and her ol pal Mrs Dawe).  JD had fallen and fractured her wrist as old ladies do, and I had to pull strings to get them outta there real quick.  Not because i wanted to do them a favour but because I couldn't bear the thought of them watching me all night.

I remember being caught sunbathing - actually we were sitting outside in the sunshine on a Sunday between 2-5 and getting to spend a day lying in her collidor the next sunday as punishment.  Wha the hell ?  is the response to that.
I believe my ability to javelin knitting needles through the window aimed at the bantum chicks improved greatly during the day.
I spend a lot of time in detention during those years, so I was either really naughty, which I wasnn't or real stupid to get caught.

Remember the common room, and your ability to commendeer the turntable, with your pile of LP.  Meatloaf, Uriah Heap, REM, Hotel California, etc......
I have a vague memory of a story about Linda destroying all these albums at some point, having become christian and convinced that they were evil.  Is this true?

Dont know what you Oranjemunders did to Ms Urie as by the time i went to WGHS she didnt want to take anymore Oranjemund girls..........  She was an old Bat and she even had her mother staying there at the end.
The kitchen staff burnt the custard one night and she made us all eat it.
My daughter (Tamsyn) is there at the moment (in her matric year) and now Mrs Shirley Harding (cannot think of her maiden name at the moment) (she was a guidance teacher) is giving them a hard time........

Hi Barbara - how much time have you got re miss urie - old rubber lips.  Yah, i remember every night after supper for that ½ hr before study again, rushing upstairs to my room to get my lp's where we would go dance with wild abandon in the common room - wasn't called the "common" room for nothing - ha, ha!  it was always myself or deidre couzins who supplied the music - she was mad about the Beatles - remember the double album of theirs she had - the one lp was transparent blue and the other one was transparent red!  still love the Eagles and Hotel California - my karaoke number!  i hated miss urie with a passion specially 'cos the baartman twins from windhoek went home whenever they wanted to even missing a day's school for the flight but when i wanted to go home for lance's 21st she wouldn't let me - old cow! i also remember being caught tanning a couple of times and had to pay the "lying in her passage" penalty.  do you remember when you came with me one weekend to arniston with caroline dichmont (± 1979) and we found a stray dog on the beach - you took a stunning photo of myself and the dog with the sea as the backdrop - well i got that photo blown up mounted (dieter heiser mounted it for me) and i still have it hanging in myhouse.  caroline dichmont is a lawyer today working for one of ct's top law firms - i made contact with her as they are also our company lawyers.  we trying to get together to catch up, just a bit hectic.  remember the middies we used to have the night before flying home and how we used to entertain ourselves over the weekends in hostels - piercing each others ears, dying hair, etc?

yah, linda went on a heavy religious trip while i was in matric and destroyed all her music/photos, etc. but the phase passed and she's now back to normal. lance and i would come stumbling in from our jols and get read the religious riot act while making ourselves late night/after jol munchies. of course, the more she lectured, the more we p...d ourselves and the madder she would get, and so round and round we would go :D

susan, promise it wasn't us......miss urie just always hated the o'mund girls.......perhaps it was our "voor op die wa" & "skrik vir niks" attitude??

lol, rubber lips, and the rolling on her feet as she stood in her doorway.

I too still have that picture somewhere, in fact I probably still have the negative somewhere too.  It was a goody, I trained with Deena and still have contact regurlarly, (Caroline's sister).  They still have the cottage in Arniston, but back then it was pukka not like it is now.
We ate oysters straight from the sea, do you remember or was that another trip.??
Remember the fancy dress when was it, anyway you were Boesman and i was  Lena, what a laugh.!!

I worked in Windhoek pre election /inderpendance and bumped into Hester Baartman-no comment.

Hi barbs, yah - when i spoke to caroline by e-mail, she said her and her boyfriend still go to their cottage in arniston - strong ties there.  not an easy place to let go of, spent many magic weekends there back in the day.  you right, it's nothing now like it was back then - was truly rustic, no electricity in the cottages only candles, hardly anyone on the beach, etc. now very touristy and have to fight your way thru crowds in season.  remember how uncle jock would go out and catch galjoen and give us one to go braai on the coals in one of the cottages - mmmm, can taste it right now, my mouth's watering - nothing like fresh galjoen straight out the ocean.

yes, i remember our little "boesman & lena" skiet - was for one of the hostel's xmas parties (i think i was std 7) - we painted ourselves brown with shoe polish and put doeke on our heads. we were supposed to be sitting around a fire cooking our supper having a very involved conversation "boesman & lena" style  :D

please give my love to deena - caroline mentioned that she's very close to deena's son.  what's hester & elizabeth up to? any idea?
