I used to enjoy hanging out at the children's library... Mrs Erickson ran the place then and that place was always full of kids...... You would always find me at the Tintin or Asterix books...... and today i can boast that I almost have the full series, (not stolen from the children's library!)..

One of my other favourites, was the Hardy Boys.... and a series called THE Great Brain, by a person called Fitzgerald... man those books were cool

Books  .. Just William  .. side  splitting  reading ..  The  Secret Seven   .adventure ...   of  course  as  you  mention the  Hardy  Boys .. many  more  the  brain  pulling  them  out  of  the  haze .. hopefully .... To think  what  books  and  reading  did  for  us ,  fueling our  imagination  , considering  today   I see  it  in  decline   Tv  and  computer  games  seem  to  rule  supreme   ..

My brother Clayton and I used to rollerskate to the Children's Library on Saturday mornings when we were very young. In summer we'd have our swimming costumes on under our clothes and have a towell round our necks and we'd head off to the pool afterwards. We'd spend hours sitting on the floor of the library reading Annuals and then choose our books to take home for the week. I don't remember it being too noisy, but it was always full of kids - Mrs Erikson must have kept us all fairly under control. I remember her keeping a box full of cardlike envelopes with our names on them and the books all had cards in them which would be placed into the envelope to show that you'd taken out the book. No computers, barcodes or scanners in those days.

The thing I remember about the library was the carpet.  I loved the feel of it on my feet.
Does anyone remeber the books that you could decide on what way the story ended.  Read about a page or two then you had to choose what way you wanted the story to go by turning to page 23 or 56???? Read another chapter and choose again from two or more directions the story was to go.

I remember working my way thro the Noddy series, but they were removed one week due to a ban before I'd got to the end.
I was verrrrrrry upset as only a new reader could be and very confused as only a young child could be as to the reason for the ban.
It was a little tricky explaining it to me.  By golly I just didn't get it.
Gave up on it and moved on.  Never have finished the series.

Barbara   .. Noddy .. yes  one  wonders  how  the   sick  minded  PC   lawyerlike please  all   ever got  into  positions of  power ..  it  seems  a  few  crazies   overule  the  sane  at times ...   reading  Noddy never  hurt  any  of  us ... Its  the  PC  with their  sick  little  minds   looking   for  something bad  to blame  their  own  damaged psyche on .. Much  like the  playing   backward of the  record era  for  satanic  influences ...   from  the  sounds  of it  taking Noddy  away  from  you did  more damage at  the  time  than  allowing you  to  contendedly  and innocently  read on   .. thanx  goodness  you  sound  like  a  sane    grown up  now  with  a  healthy dislike  for  the PC    breed .

I loved the Hardy Boys, my brothers had a whole series and I read them all. Luckily Jarren got the reading gene but wasn't interested in the Hardy Boys at the library, so I took it out on my name and read him the first chapter, he was hooked. He has read every one here in the Kimberley library and we bought all the ones we could get from the second hand book shop, was so nice to have my son reading and enjoying the same books I read as a child.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm one of them. Yes, I read all the Hardy Boys books, as well as the Nancy Drews, Secret Seven and Famous Five. At school, I would also take out the Biggles books. He was an airforce pilot and the stories were so gripping.

I also had a go at a few of them, but being Afrikaans, I went through the whole "Trompie" series.  Couldn't wait for the next one to appear on the shelves!
