Hi Sandy,
That pic of your mom singing certainly brought back the memories. She had a superb voice and a very pleasant Scottish lilt. Her repertoire included not only the pop songs of the day but also some old Scottish ballads. The songs that stand out for me were I Belong to Glasgow (or, more properly, Ah Belang tae Glasgie) which always had everyone in full chorus and the old Harry Lauder ballad: Keep Right On To The End of the Road.
She had to be almost dragged on stage but once she got there she was the entertainer superb. On one occasion, I think it may have been a New Year's Eve Ball, she and a band member called Poingdestre (never known as anything else but Pointy) put on an impromptu double act that had everyone in stitches. Pointy was a very affable, short little guy with clownish features who played the concertina boere orkes style. To hear him launch into the Glasgae song - played in tikkie draai manner - with your mom was somehow or other so ridiculous that the crowd roared for more.
She always featured large at New Year's Eve with a rendering of Auld Lang Syne that had everyone gulping with emotion. In fact your mom was something of a celebrity in town and always in demand on social occasions.
Thanks again for the memories.
Regards,
Bob.

Pointy  Poingdestre .. yes indeed  a comical   man ..   mom  worked at the Veg  market  in the early days with his wife   Sue  before  she moved  to shopping  center ( still remember visiting her there when I was  2 bricks and tickey high ) , now there was another mismatched couple ,, Sue a  tall   strong woman with a big strong  earthy  voice ..  her hubby pointy  short .. mutt and jeff .. many stories of misadventures  of pointy .. one  night he wanted to go out with his pals ..   Sue  said  no !!   so  he said  well he's  going to bed ,, sulked off  in  huff to one  of the boys  rooms and locked  door ( ha  ha  intent was to  sneak out of bedroom window )    waited a respectable time  to do the sneak  out of window thing .. jumped out of window to get the shock of his life .. big  Sue  second guessing  him   had  filled  one  of those  huge  zinc wash tubs  with  boiling water  and placed it below the window ..  the howls of pain  alerted Sue  , who  then went  out  and  escorted  him  back into the house ..   a recollection   from  my Mom ..
