discodance  This seemed all the rage back in the day, I never had this, but what age do you have to be and what happens at the party? Why did it die out?

That would have been when you became 21. Those years it was seen as the age you could call yourself your "own" boss. Could get married without parents permission (not that may of us would have dare to do it), sign contracts (HP buying) and so on. You usually got a silver key with the 21 as part of it. Sort of the key to your "freedom" or adulthood.
I think it died out cause life just got to fast and in a certain sense maybe cause children are now raise differently.

Whoo Hoo I share a birthday with Roslyn Dodd......

Diana Rudd (Boehme)

My children and their friends all had 21st Parties and received their keys. So I think it still happens. My youngest was 21 last November. Coming of Age is as Stephanie has said.
Sadly Roslyn passed away a few years back. I still have contact with her sister Pat.

In our family there was two different " coming of age " occasions for the girls . the first was when they reached 16 . Mother would cook a very nice dinner on the Sunday closest to the actual birthday date . And Farther would present his [pride an joy ] dauther with a necklace and locker . Inside the locker he placed a little card in his own handwriting , the verse that reads " The Lord bless you , and keeps you , the Lord give you peace "
Rember the saying .. sweet sixteen and never been kissed ? Well , Im not sure , but I guess it also meant that you have the parents permission to have a boyfriend. although it was never comunicated as such
and The second "coming of age"  is the 21 st birtday with friend attending , cakes and a silver key .

For the boys .. just the 21 st birthday counted
