I always liked the way all the mongrel dogs in town looked bat eared and jackal like, no such thing as a brak here in england.

And you will get slapped so frequently and continiously by the farmers around here for singing the praises of the jackall..  Though beautifull, they are a menace around a sheepfarm  -  can cause you a loss worth many rands for preying amongst lambs.  Sometimes we have losses of approx 10 lambs per night - just turn that round to money!!!!!!  But, although we have these problems we keep to the golden rule:  NO POISON!  That is one thing that gets me to the core of my guts:- the use of poisons.  The whole environment gets affected by that.  The waste......

We had a guy that worked for us for 2 years, he came from the Kalahari, Namibian side of the fence, and he was always upset if he saw a Jackals walking around the town, wanted to shoot them all, for the same reason Dalene states, on the family farm somewhere by Aroab the Jackals kill all the lambs, major pest on that side, but one has to remember that Oranjemund is in a conservation area.....

Last week the pont at Ochta/Sendelingsdrift was reopened with immigration offices... for tourists etc...

Still, there is nothing that comes close to the sounds of nature at night on a farm.  The call of jackall, the sounds of diffirent kind of owls, close to nightfall that familiar "wheelbarrow wheel" sqeaking sound the guineafowl make, the 'boskriek' rubbing it's hind legs together - it makes a sound similar to the one when you used to put a piece of carton into the spokes of your bicycle wheels.

And the best of all - no traffic or any other man made sounds.  Total bliss.

Hey Dalene

You are one of the lucky ones that has no "man made sounds" around her at night, I have a lot of that around me at night with the snoring and f*$ting from the men in my home...sometimes I really feel left out and join in.....hahaha

Dalene Steenkamp (Coetzee)

You know, I never thought about the snoring, f@**ting, choking and moaning sounds as being man made human sounds at all.  At night ----- that's when the real animal in men come crawling out --- from underneath the blankets, these undomesticated sounds and smells are instinctively produced.  And heaven forbid you lift those covers.....!!!!!!!  Why do you think the dogs start barking and growling for no reason in the wee hours of morning?

Nah, you right, but the men folk are so lucky we don't actually classify them in the same category as jackall.  Can you imagine the fun we will have hunting them down.  Makes me think of this joke - a good one for Kenny's joke corner actually:

Q:  What do you do when your husband is running around in the garden, all bloody and hysterical, screaming his head off?

A:  Stay calm, breath deeply, take aim and shoot again!!!    tee hee hee
