George Benson - On Broadway..?

Yes Ricky, it is George Benson and "On Broadway". This track takes me back to summers on the beach at Camps Bay.

A karma point is hereby awarded to you sir!

Ricky,

The challenge was to find a track by a band or solo artist who you know of but whose music presents a challenge to identify in either MIDI or MP3 format.

The prize for correctly identifying the song and who sings it is five karma points. Yes five (5) points because I do not think you have a hope in hell of getting this answer correct within the time limit allowed.

RULES: To qualify for the prize, you need to correctly identify the title of the track and the artist/band who sing it. The time limit to provide your answers ends at 9pm SA time or 7pm UK time today.

Good Luck!

Bad luck Ricky.

The answer is Frank Zappa singing "Montana"

Here is a link to YouTube to see Zappa perform the song.

The side story to this track is that I heard it played live on the night of 10th December 1971 by Zappa and his backing band "The Mothers of Invention" at the Rainbow Theatre, Finsbury Park, London.

This was the night he was pushed off stage by the jealous & irate boyfriend of a fan.

I saw it happen and it is as clear today as it was at the time it happened. The guy who did it timed the attack so well - he struck just as Zappa had finished an encore, "I Wanna Hold Your Hand", ( a tribute to The Beatles), and was in the act of removing his guitar by lifting the strap over his head.

I had a clear view of the stage and was watching Zappa when I saw a guy leave his seat and walk down the aisle on the right then up the unguarded steps to the stage. He was dressed in a black poloneck and black trousers. Nobody tried to stop him. I thought he was part of the crew. He them walked a few steps toward Zappa and from behind he shoved Zappa viciously while Frank had his arm  up in the air removing  the strap. Zappa was propelled off the stage into the deep orchestra it. Silence.

Then one of the Mothers still standing behind his mic after taking their bows, broke the stunned silnce and said "Is their a doctor in the house?". We were then ushered out. Outside the next audience for the later show were waiting to get in. Too bad, the gig was cancelled.

Here is what Zappa recalled of the incident:

"The band thought I was dead." says Frank in The Real Frank Zappa Book. "I had fallen fifteen feet down into a concrete-floored orchestra pit, my head was over on my shoulder and my neck was bent like it was broken. I had a gash in my chin, a hole in the back of my head, a broken rib and a fractured leg. One arm was paralyzed."

It was a miracle indeed that he was still alive. Whether you take the height of the fall as 10 feet (Miles, Frank Zappa - A Visual Documentary, p.55), 12 feet (Michael Gray, Mother! is the Story of Frank Zappa, p.107) or 15 feet (Frank, The Real Frank Zappa Book, p.114) it was a hell of a long way down. How had it happened?

"In those days," Frank explains, "I didn't carry a bodyguard; 'security' was supplied by the local promoters. In the case of this concert, the security consisted of two big West Indian guys, at either side of the stage. During the encore, they were off smoking reefer someplace.

Thank goodness the pressure is off! Sorry to let you down Robert, but I do not know that number. While I did listen to Zappa in the day, he was not one of my favourites....Oh well, maybe next time. Could have done with that cigar!

NTW me old mucker!

I'll do mainstream next time. Zappa is a once in a blue moon time to listen to and refresh one's appreciation for conservative rock. I call my taste conservative rock. Black Sabbath,Alice Cooper, Nirvana, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Nickleback, Clapton etc are not out on the avant garde fringes like Zappa.

Until next the next FANTAZIMIGORICAL challenge - rock on!
