Brother Loftus was one mean son of a sea faring cochcroach........ I remember him disarming a student called Nicolas Donnigan who was threatening students and teachers with a knife up on the upper school by the clocktower.... walked right up to him saying...."Sha! EM! Child! you should'nt point a WHACK! " , before you knew it he had smacked the kid to the ground......  :emot112:

Sorry Robert..going off Wynberg now but you just podded my memory, Carl, Cherry and I were trying to remember the Head Masters name at Centaurus during Cherry and my time (earlier in this topic).........His name was Mr. Blackbeard.

And I thought I had Alzheimers? The principal's name was Ivan Baard. He left and Mr West was acting principal until they appointed Clive Roos who was a Rondebosch Old Boy. Carel Fourie was the hockey coach who was jailed for molesting a boy in the hostel. When he was released from jail, he was teaching at a coloured school in Mariental. Not sure where he is now. I loved him to bits and was so upset to hear what he did. There were rumours that he was gay but I never believed them at the time.

Florrie, Diana, Cherry - any chance that your Baard principal had a daughter? I was at school (Wynberg Girls High) with a Vivian Baard from Windhoek - we're talking '78-82' - she was a year ahead of me?

Thanks for jolting the old brain cells back to life Florrie. I agree, Carel Fourie wasn't so bad. He was in charge of the boys hostel when I started at Centaurus. During school hours he was one of the strictest teachers around, but after hours he had a heart of gold. One long weekend only us four OM guys were left in the hostel with nowhere to go (Me, my brother, Paul and Tony Gallagher). Mr Fourie booked a chalet in Swakop and took us with for the long weekend. He paid for everything out of his own pocket. Whils't in Swakop, you wouldn't believe he was the strictest teacher at Centaurus. We drank and smoked in front of him and had free reign for the whole weekend without the usual hostel rules and regulations.

About 6 months later the first rumours began of indecent conduct. One of the Std 8 boys in the 1st hockey team mentioned to his parents that Mr Fourie had made a pass at him. The parents ran straight to the newspapers. The rest is history.
