I knew Ivan Morrow in 1961-2 when he was a draughtsman in the survey dept. He introduced me to my wife who was a nursing sister. He married Nan du Plessis after I had left and stayed at O'mund for many years after that, becoming a public relations officer for the mine due to his pleasant demeanor.

I lost track of the Morrows until about ten years ago. Ivan had died by then, I think of a heart attack, and Nan was living then in a flat in a Cape Town suburb on the west side of False Bay.  She had been the theatre sister at the O'mund hospital, and an excellent one.

I also remember Ivan describing his youth in Cape Town where he and friends used to catch crayfish by the 44 gallon drum-full, to sell them to the hotels at ten shillings a drum! When I arrived in O'mund he played wing on the rugby team, by far the fastest person on the field through shear terror he said.

Have fond memories of Uncle Ivan. Many a tea time spent at the survey offices listening to the banter, jokes and Sperrgebiet tales. Will never forget visiting at the survey offices during school holidays (step dad was a surveyor) and Ivan would talk a hole into my head about why my old man should give me a raise on my hostel pocket money then nag the old man that he was being a cheapskate. Thanks to Ivan I got a raise every time my old man did...
Remember his eye for detail... the 3D landscape models he made and the model of the bucket wheel excavator to name a few; the picture framing he did in his pondok at home. Inovation was another of his talents; like the "hamster wheel" idea he gave me for the anything-that-floats... I never got to build it though.
Andy was quite a bit older than me but remember him being one of the few courageous Omund shortboard sailors to venture out of the mouth and sail the Atlantic where many feared to go.
Long live their memories...

All things electrical contain smoke. Making it come out is easy; getting it back in? ... yeah right!!!

I once watched Andy and Craig Thornton windsurfing in those waves at the beach, really impressive for those days, needless to say Owen Kitchen became the master of those same waves later... I also believe Owen holds the record for being the only person ever to windsurf Meob Bay, anyone know more about this historical event?

That's typical of Andy. I'd never had thought anybody would go out on those waves. Geeeeez!
