The chatter around the shop floor this fine Oranjemund morning has to do with the dismal results that the Matric Class of 2013 achieved.

Sources reckon as many as 80% of the class failed with the majority of the students failing Maths...

This is indeed worrying for the first Matric Class at Oranjemund Private School!

It was mentioned to me by a person that it was interesting to note how many teachers at OPS had send their offspring to boarding school outside of Oranjemund.

An old Oranjemunder, who left the town called me about two years ago, he often calls to chat.... He had just moved his family to a new job in South Africa and had sent his child to attend one of the local schools. He was mortified when the new school informed him that his child would have to do extra Maths lessons as the child was way behind the kids in the South African school....... the reason why he was so mortified, was due to the fact that his child had been one of the top performers back in Oranjemund.  He was concerned and told me that that he actually called OPS to let them know that they were behind the rest of the schools in both Maths and Science.....

Now, we sit here and wonder how this situation can be remedied.... will somebody grab the bull by the horns or must we see more parents sending their offspring to boarding school....

OPS has a strong tradition of high achievers, I am sure this can be reached again.....

Where does the problem lie, OPS syllabus, Teachers.....Kids.....????

Are kids allowed to use calculators at schools these days. ?
I hear a lot of kids struggle to do mental arithmetic these days.

My own opinion, which I am full entitled to air, Communication......  the ability to be able to communicate, to be able to read and pronounce English properly.....

Heard of teachers that cannot pronounce words in English properly.....

notfair  Clearly not surprised with the maths results. After we wrote the exams we released the exams contained completely new work we hadn't prepared for in class with the teacher, not even sure if the teacher himself was following the syllabus... yellocard

Dear Mwaala
Can I suggest that you or one of the other concerned parents gets hold of the Namibian Matric syllabus and that someone with a strong Mathematics (say one of the mine engineers) background goes through the question paper and compares the questions asked with the syllabus content.
Dear parents you need to get involved otherwise next year the problem will repeat itself.
