For many years I saw this image
in various places around Oranjemund. In Various publications and
in the museum. It always fascinated me. Everytime that I cross
the river via the bridge, I glance down at the brown water and
always imagined how these pioneers of those days crossed the mighty
Orange and in particular this photo. Who were these people, what
year was this and why were they crossing. The photo was originally
published elsewhere on this site. The suprise , suprise , I received
the following comments:
"Imagine my surprise when I recognized my grandfather
in your photograph under People titled “crossing the river”. The
gentleman in the white dust jacket is Vic Cummings. He was an engineer. Going
through all the photos has brought back so many memories. I am
sure that I have some old photos stashed away – will look
for them and send them to you.
Regards
Cheryl Quantrill (nee van Greunen) "
