I
include Hennie's comments: "
Names and people have a way of disappearing
into the "boendoes" of
the past , and means little to a later generation .
along the old Mittag road , all the old signboards
have disappeard by the mid 80's . mr Piet Lourens , the GM at the
time must have been surprised to find the local hostel bearing
his name .." Hotel - a -la Piet . " which also offered
a tempting menu , prepared in its kitchen
other names were Bobbejaanbultr , Misty valley , Mooimeisiesfontein & Beverly
hills
The men who put those signs up along the road , were the ones
who pushed the mining trenches northward from Uubvlei to no 1 plant
area
See atached photo..I overheard that :- It was at Rooikop where
Solly started his shop in a small way ., later as operations moved
northward , so did he
As one of the original residents of Affenrucken
, he moved his shop there . He stocked necesseties for the men
on the mine ,
soap , toothpaste , bullybeef , etc
Apparantly He became a authority
on the lore of that piece of barren country and empty beaches.
Solly maintained that those beaches were not always empty , there
were mermaid once , he said ."
