Any of you old Tannies out there got any advice on how to help a brand new seven year old get over the pain of an abcess? Cameron had tooth pain at the beginning of last week, Michele took here to the dentist twice in the week, one filling later, all hell broke loose on Friday night, turns out she has a very painful abcess under her tooth.... she is now on antibiotics... but it apparently takes a few days before it has any effect... the pain medicine is minor league stuff and the nights are a terror.... right now she is in the bedroom with her mother screaming blue murder...if this has not cleared up , by Wednesday, I'll have to srive down to Cape Town to see a dentist there, losing my faith on the locals up here... Anyhow when I was growing up, my dad being the true Scot he is, doused my tooth and gums with Whisky to kill the pain of an Abcess.....Cameron refuses to let me try it.... Is there any other advice that some of you can give?

Thanks Mavis, she is currently having a kip, so when she wakes up screaming later, I will try and convince her...she is scared of letting anything near her tooth, except for food, (that's my girl!)

Is there any over the counter tincture you can get from the pharmacy, just put drops directly onto the tooth; this should help the pain..........hope she will be alright, keep us informned
I'm to young to have any remedies.....I do know it's very very very sore.Strange the antibiotic should have kicked in within 24 hours. I had much the same thing last year.I would go to the doctors and demand a strong pain killer(relevent to her age) the child should not have to suffer when there is medication to help her. Give her lots of loves.
She's been asleep for almost 3 and a half hours now, just a minor cry which Michele sorted out in 5 minutes.... The fun usually starts at 01.00 am.....

I had one when I was young, my mother woke me during the night, made me gargle hot salty water, apparently the abcess burst and the next morning I didn't even remember being woken up.
i too would advise salty water to gaggle with.
Good to see so many in favour of the very warm salty water .. mother natures bounty ... it draws .. it helps increase bloodflow so hastening the flow of antibiotic to the distress site ( not that i am entirely in favour of them but they have their place in dire circumstances ) again a good painkiller in the likes of Myprodol .. Codeine combination , good antiinflamatory the best for tooth and sinus distress .... to help finish off the job .. silicae biochemical tissue salts are also a good adjunct to standard medicine ... trust me i have had my fair share of abcess misery ..
Thanks for all the advice my fellow Oranjemunder's, it was a brilliant night, Cameron slept in my spot with mommy last night, I slept in her room, and she never woke up th ewhole night, I was awoken with Cameron rocking me awake to inform me that she no longer has any pain in her mouth...... she has just left for school with mommy, and is as bright as an irishman on St Patricks day...without the green of course... So here's holding thumbs that we don't get a phonecall from Aunty Pearl the school secretary this morning..... Mommy and Daddy are very happy.....

Was going to ask how our little patient is this morning. So pleased she's feeling better,it is awfull when they hurting so and all you can do is give lots of loves. As a matter of interest did the salt water work?
We could'nt give it to her.... I even tried whisky..... but she was'nt having any of that..... so much for being a descendant of the Scottish race..... e154
As i see it. Only Anti Biotics will clear that. Only then can the tooth be pulled or get treatment

Mike, happy to hear she's feeling better, nothing worse than seeing your child in pain - just a little advice for future ref tho - i always keep a bottle of oil of cloves around the house for those midnight tooth pains - helps ease the pain until you can get to a dentist/doctor - put some on cottonwool and bite down gently so the oil of cloves is on the sore tooth - works wonders.

have you tried BONJELA COOL. we gave it to our boys when they were teething. Keep it in the fridge , let her take it to school and she can put it on herself. Doesn't taste as bad as clove oil.
Don't think that'll help. That stuff is supposed to cool everything down. It would probably hurt even more.
As I said earlier , as Kids we always got given whisky.... not to drink, but to numb the tooth and gums... Cameron would'nt open her mouth for anything....SO I drank the whisky...did'nt want to waste....

Damn - why wasn't I in the Alexander house when I had toothache as a kid?
I wonder what Bertie has to say on this one ?? I have a troublesome molar that was rescued by my dentist .. capped ,, there is an underlying problem that seems to flare causing abcess .. the emergency dentist said that I would need root canal work or extraction ... thats apparently terrifying .. so I left it after the antibiotics did their job .. it started flaring again on friday night ... I thought there must surely be a natural way of stopping this flaring from becoming a full blown abcess .. found these tablets .. Nature fresh wild Olive leaf . took two tabs tucked them in cheek on site of flare and allowed them to slowly dissolve against the area .. when they had gone all soft from the saliva left them as a sort of poultice till slowly swallowed .. this took about an hour .. then followed with same about an hour later ... Viola ! flare up gone and no pain or suffering .. Ok granted I caught it early .. but it worked ... Bertie your opinion ??

@ Sandy - Not so sure that wild olive leaf has any antiseptic power, and if it's a brewing abscess in the bone, it will come back. Have they taken an x-ray? Please let it be seen to - before it's too late and the only option is to have the tooth removed! Hey, by the way, Sandy, I know where you work, and the ladies at reception will let me in - i've done it before - so don't make me come over there with a briefcase full of sharp instruments!!!! As far as natural remedies are concerned, you can take quite a few immune system stimulants and modulators as a prophylactic to prevent it from coming back, but it will not get rid of an abscess (chronic or acute). My number is in the Cape Town directory.

This thing seems to flare up when stressed or tired .. so far the "treatment" has worked .. no recurrence .. it is a wrecked tooth .. it had a split .. my dentist was very innovative .. explained options .. extraction .. a missing molaris not nice . a bridge would stress the adjoining teeth .. Implant .. not even going there .. so he ground down .. glued the split .. built up base and put on cap ... possibly nerve action causing inflammation .. but yes the Wild olive tabs have worked .. still doing it once a day as preventative ... I mean it did the job in 4 hours initially .. but yes when i get courage up i will go .. ( actually near time for clean and exam ) and discuss options ... the emergency dentist had this wonderful new digital X ray thing and showed exactly where inflammation was .. so yes it is a trouble spot .. do some reading up on the wild olive ..
