Anybody out there remember the "dental milk" we used to get at break times? Had to line up on the netball courts to get our milk before we could go off and play...........
Our high school injections in std 5.......afterwards the guys would go around punching everybody on their injection spot - sadistic bunch!!!.........
Barnies on the rugby field after school ...........normally between an Afrikaner and a Soutie?
Jumping into the school pool fully clothed on the last day of std 5...................
Bruce the golden Labarador that used to follow Kevin Laubscher around - the only dog allowed at the sports days and at school itself - would lie at his feet in assembly and in our class.
I remember the milk, you had to drink it, no choice, it had fluoride in it or something.... came in little plastic containers with the lids.... Was'nt that Kevin laubscher a good sportsman?
:P
that's the milk i'm talking about - we totally blew the whole objective of it all by bringing nesquick, etc. to put in it - sugar deluxe - probably cancelled out any goodness it was supposed to provide. yah, that's the same kevin laubscher - i know after we left std 5 in '77 his long jump record stood for many years after that. him and his brother phillip were also excellent soccer players, kevin was also good at rugby - total all rounder.
i remember old zandhuis , he was the principle during my time at school , got many a lashing from him
can you recall doing 'skollie patrollie" ( scholar patrol) wearing those stupid orange bibs and hats. we would often try to stop all the cars that were going fast
Gee Darryl, I thought you found those outfits attractive, used them to try and pick up a few girls now and then did'nt you?
:D
the only thing those outfits would enable you to pick is a good beating
Remember Mr Bergh - he had this pipe thing that he used to hit us on the hands with.
Hey, I drive past the skollie-patrolie every morning and lunchtime. Can't believe I used to do that job and thought it was so great back then!
they still do it!!!!!
remember the round-abouts in sub a as many people on it as possible and then two or three would be in the midddle pushing and everybody would be chanting 'go baby go '
Nope, you were a year ahead of me. I do remember having roundabouts there though - not sure when they were removed as they are no longer there - only a couple of jungle gyms and see-saws.
Who remembers running cross country through the desert and past the lodge? The kids still run the same route!
I can remember all my teachers - I wonder how long they were there after 1966:
Sub A - Miss Malherbe
Sub B - Mrs Castle (she used to bang you on your head with two fingers it you were not quite up to standard!)
Std 1 - Miss Pienaar
Std 2 - Miss Burgess
Std 3 - Mrs Coffin
Std 4 - Miss C Smit
Std 5 - Miss C Smit
Mr Venter was the Principal and Mr Dickenson the Deputy
Mr Steyn used to teach us joined up writing very precisely - light strokes up, dark strokes down
mrs castle ruled the class, got youre writing wrong and a swift klap on the back of youre legs resulted, shit it hurt,if you showed no pain she would nip youre hair stubbs and try to lift you off the floor,in todays world ,you would get done for child abuse, them days it was normal, the whole word mite benefit from those practices, can anyone remember mrs castle bubble car, lite blue in colour, the whole roof lifted off to get out,i think it was a meshersmit,ha ha.i tried to piss in her petrol tank and she must of just filled it,low and behold,i jumped about holding my you know whats for an age, memories,if i wrote a book ,no one would believe it realy happend, take care all x
I'm from the 70's and I remember Mrs Castle...... she still scares me,,,,,, :P
When my teacher was Mrs Castle I had the pleasure of sharing the desk/table with her son, Philip. That could be a bit scarey! Poor lad, she had even higher standards for him
Does anyone remember marble season? And going to get your injections in std5 - then getting punched on the arm after it.
I remember the flouride milk. I also remember the fishpaste sandwiches cut into triangles that they made us eat at Playschool. I hated them, but the teachers used to watch you like a hawk to make sure that you ate them.
do you remember Exam time - and having to carry your desk to the assemble hall.
Hi Claire
How are things?
Yes, I do remember marble season, we also had a season for yo-yo's and skipping ropes, l if I remember correctly. We also used to play "sardines in a can" at the wall opposite the school pool!
I'd forgotten about having to carry our desks to the hall for exams - they were really heavy and we kept stopping to put them down!
Ah yes, child labour, still alive and well in the Peoples Republic of Oranjemund (just how many Nike's do you think this years std 5's could churn out in an hour). Am I the only one who remembers shaking the milk containers till the top layer of milk turned to butter... hmmmm ...
Paul, I remember making butter with the milk given.
hey cuz....
yip loved giving lummies to all those guys that got boosters....
i think its still the reason i to this day cant really drink milk....
Does anyone remember building a line of pennies (or cents) from the infants area along, I think, to the headmaster's office? Can't remember why we did it but it happened each year
Yes, we did that as well once or twice... it was for fundraising, all the money would be donated afterwards
What do you mean by "would be", should be? will be? .... or did the teachers spend it in the hockey club?
:-\
Hi Claire, not sure what year your talking about the marble season, but we had one in 1966, we also played a game with little charms....cant remember how or what the aim of the game was but i remeber the little charms were all different. also remeber a game where you dug a groove in the soil...balanced a stick over it....got another stick and hit it into the air.....sounds odd now....probably was at the time too...maybe it wasnt a real game either.....ha ha
I remember the marble seasons in 1966 and before. I think they came around every year. They all used to be lined up at break. Do you remember "goonies" the silver balls of different sizes - I supposed basically they were different sized ball bearings. They were killer "marbles" and quite good acquisitions. I had a marble bag made by Mum and was quite a good player (about the only thing). They used to set up the most elaborate mountains of marbles which no-one had a chance of knocking over. Don't remember the pit with the stick - sounds great fun!!! I remember playing "I wrote a letter to my love and on the way I dropped it" or whatever the shortened version was called. Also British Bulldog which could get a bit vicious as times!!
"Red ROver, Red Rover, can we come over..." , the marble season was like an Indian Market, kids with bags of marbles, "Arlies", chinese checkers and goonies.... Every day, some bright spark would turn up to school with a more shinier and bigger silver marble than the previous guy. Clint and I would hit the dumps behind town garage after school and dig up those big ballbearings from the abandoned trucks, the size of a grown man's fist......
Man! those were the day's!
:'(
does anyone rember the marble shys,a pice of wood with numbers above the cut out pieces, you stood ten steps away, rolled youre allies and if it went through a hole you had to pay up the corresponding hole number, all allies that missed ,you got to keep
yep, I do, I had one, some guys cheated though, made the hole very small for the arlies to go through, or put a small, pebble infront of the high scoring gate... Those Bas*ar*s!
:o
Yes, I remember them as well. You didn't stand a chance of winning - but you just had to keep trying!
Hi Delia,
I guess this must be Delia Olivier I am replying to? By the description of your posts, it would have to be. Nicky Hodge here, do you still remember me? Wow, the magic of the internet hey? Gee, the memories are just flooding back. I can remember all those times that you have mentioned, at school with the dental milk, the souties verse the boere at lunch breaks and after school, Kevin Loubschers dog Bruce (I think he had another black one called" Hondo" or something), the Saturday matinee movie (with regular black and white serials such as " Rocket Man ") and two queues outside for the have's and have not's. Sometimes,we used to go back when the guys were cleaning the Cinema and we used to collect all the tickets that had not been torn up. As the tickets only consisted of a few different colours, they could be used again at another showing. All one had to do, was find out what colour ticket was on sale that particular day, then go home to get the corresponding colour. We would then go back to the non ticket holders' queue and sell off as many as we could. This must have been the CAPITALIST in me.
One vivid memory I have of you, is riding on the local town bus on the back seat with all the gang (Jackie Wilson, Paula Wilson, Natasha Le Roux, Warren Summers.....To name a few). On Sundays, it used to take us all to the beach or Yacht Club, and I can particularly remember one occasion where you were singing the song called "Angelo". I think it went like this.... "Long ago, high in the mountains of Mexico, lived a young sheperd boy Angelo....... " ( This is pretty sad......I still remember the words).
Well Delia, I have only just registered, so I'll post this now and see what transpires. I hope you and yours are well. What are Lance and Linda up to these days? How about your Mom Steph? Trust they are all well.
The skollie-patrollie is still there! You were pretty important if you were one (surprisingly I was one, until High School... naughty became more fun) and you could leave class a little earlier!
Injections sucked, but we all walked in a line just to be pained and later to be pained by the boys...
Nicky - OMG - of course i remember you - std5E of '77 - what a class - apparently (according to the teachers after we left) the naughtiest class to hit OPS for a long time thanks to the likes of Leigh McBride, Warren Summers, Steven Brownless, Gary Wilson, etc. Do you remember the time Zandie left the class for a short while, Kevin ran to the loo in the meantime and Leigh decided to jump on him from the top of a cupboard when he came back and instead ended up jumping on Zandie? ?The things we got up to - too numerous to mention here but man do I laugh when I go down memory lane of our school days.
I remember those bus rides down to the beach and back very well - used to spend the whole day just riding up and down to relieve the boredom. And yes, I remember the song Angelo..........was a big hit back then!!!
Lance is here in Cape Town working for De Beers Marine, living in Edgemead, still married to Annerita (Havenga) (26 yrs now), got 2 kids. Linda's also living here in Cape Town - area manager for Famous Brands. My mom, can you believe it, is still working......also living in Cape Town. We all live close by each other so see each other a lot.
What you up to and where you living?
Hi again Delia,
Glad to see you haven't forgotten me, after all these years. That story about Leigh Mcbride has just had me in fits of laughter. We certainly had some characters amongst us hey? I wonder what ever happened to Steven Brownless and Warren and Gary for that matter. You probably already know that Leigh McBride sadly passed away just over a year ago? I only found out a couple of months ago, and was shocked. He was living in Southampton in the UK apparently.
Do you remember Gary Wilson getting in some sort of trouble by one of the male teachers ( his name escapes me at present ), only to be confronted by his very protective sister Jackie. What a hoot. He never was quite the same after that. LOL. Yes Delia, those days were just awesome, and memories that I hold dear to my heart.
Glad to hear Linda, Lance and your Mom are all well, and prospering. Wow, Lance married for 26 years already .......... The mind boggles! I remember he left for Marine Division while we were still living in Oranjemund. Has he been there ever since?
We are all well here. I am still married to Gabi - 22 years already. Must be doing something right I guess ...... LOL. We ended up with two kids....... Rhett who is 22 years old and has moved to Brisbane with his girlfriend, and Alexa who turns seventeen in August. Shit I feel old .......!!!!!!
We currently reside in Perth in Western Australia, and I am still plying my trade for a company called Tiwest, that produces Titanium Oxide.... ( or pigment , used in plastics ). You can do a GOOGLE search if you so wish. We lived in New Zealand for about 3 years, before finally settling in OZ. We lived up in the Goldfields ( Kalgoorlie) until about 2003, then made our move to Perth. I left the trade for about seven years, and ventured into the exploration industry, where I became an exploration driller, looking for gold and nickel reserves. We would drill directional holes to depths of about 1.5 KM. Quite interesting and varied work.
Gabi is still working, and is a senior property manager for a local real estate company. She used to be in sales at one stage. The economy in Western Australia is absolutely booming here, due to the Chinese' relentless hunger for our minerals, which in turn is driving the mining sector.Needless to say, real estate here has gone through the roof over the last few years.
On a sad note,my Dad passed away about two weeks ago, after finally succumbing to Parkinson's Disease which he had been fighting for numerous years. My Mom is well, apart from the stress associated with my Dads death. My brother Duncan is doing very well, and is currently a Professor at UNISA in Pretoria.
What are you up to these days? Are you married? ...... Have any kids? Whatcha doing for a crust ? Etc etc.
Good to catch up with you again.
Hey Nicky, there is another property company in Perth called Mason Properties, this is owned by another ex Oranjemunder, John Mason, who was here in the 70's as a contractor... just an interesting point!
;)
Nicky, yah sadly I heard about Leigh - my mom keeps in regular contact with his folks who are living in the UK - apparently his dad went to wake him up one morning for work and he had died in his sleep, heart attack i believe. I was saddened by it - Leigh and I were quite close with our folks working together (our dads in the power station and moms in the main office block for the top brass) and still kept in contact after leaving high school even - i saw him last in Margate on the Natal south coast in 1997 when he was living with his folks there - I had gone up to see Linda as she was living there at the time and went through to their place for lunch - Oumie was still around then bustling about the kitchen doing all the cooking - what a lovely family - very fond memories there. Philip Laubscher also passed away a few months ago.
I saw Gary Wilson in the late 90's sometime - he was working for a movie company as an electrician, ironically enough right opposite where I was working back then. Still the same - that mop of blond curls - hadn't changed a bit. Then I believe he left for Jo'burg and was then living with his folks in Darling on the West Coast. The last I heard of his folks they were in the UK, not sure where he is now. Would also love to hear about Steven Brownless, Warren Summers, Wayne Hoffman (naughty shit), Simon Mason (ditto) and the rest.
Wasn't it Mr Esterhuizen (i think he took us for history) or Mr Koch (maths) who met their match with Jackie? It's ringing some bells, just not too clearly. Do u remember "The Pin Gang" - me, Anne Jones, Jackie, Paula, Natasha, Sheena used to wear a huge nappie pin on our blazers (i remember it every time i look at my std5 photo - i'm there pin and all) - geez, we thought we were so cool! I saw Anne a few years ago at my aunt's place for Xmas - still married to Andre du Toit and exactly the same Anne that we all know. It was so good catching up with her.
sorry, my maths's not so hot - Lance's been married for 23 years not 26 (what's 3 yrs tho when it's been that long hey). Yah, he's been with De Beers Marine since leaving o'mund in '88 - be a fool to move now - if you can retire a de beers pensioner, you're set for life. Me - well, after leaving o'mund in '93, came to ct, then to transkei where my daughter was born in '94, on to botswana for a while, then back to ct in '95, now divorced and my daughter and i have been living in the table view/parklands area since then. working for a food & beverage process engineering company in paarden eiland - not really my cup of tea but for the moment, put's a roof over our heads and food in our stomachs. socially, got wonderful bunch of friends, have regular family get togethers and just enjoying life. i do quite often though long for the simple life of o'mund and my soul more than often hankers for those wide open spaces.
Nicky, any memories of our std 5 class, please send them my way - what one remembers, others have forgotten. great catching up with you. say hi to gabi 4 me.
Hi Mike,
The name Mason Real Estate is vaguely familiar. I think they may operate in the Northern suburbs. An ex- Oranjemunder hey? Hell we are everywhere. I will have to do some research. Cheers for that bit of info.
PS. Can't remember if I let you know that I do remember Jimmy Jones at the compressor workshop. I think he liked the outdoor life ( camping / 4x4 driving etc). Can't believe that he is still working at Uubvlei after all these years.
Just received your message about the obituary message. Much appreciated, and thanks a lot.
HI Delia,
Cheers for your very informative post. All very interesting stuff. Do you have any school photos you could scan? I hardly have anything, as my Mom has them all packed away in Cape Town. I do have one, but a fishmoth has got behind the glass and chowed off Zandies ear. LOL. ( I'm serious ).
I will have to reply to your post properly tomorrow evening , as Alexa is kicking me off. She needs to contact all her MSN pals. Some of them live in Queensland, so with the time difference, the window of opportunity is quite small.
I am gonna have to go now, as there is nothing more annoying than a disgruntled teenager. See ya!!!
Hi Delia/Nicky
Would Leigh McBride be the brother of Vanessa Mcbride? If so does anyone know where she is now?
Michele, yes Leigh is Vanessa's brother- she's an advocate, last i heard living in jo'burg. i could check with my mom, she'll know.
Hey Delia, yes I think we all remember the "cool pin gang". Paula and I are still in Oranjemund. Jackie is in Kleinzee and Natasha is somewhere in Wellington or Paarl. Do you remember the Robin Hood t-shirt that you always favoured?? I was visiting my mother a couple of months ago and came accross a photo album with all our teenage dances, parties and school holiday pics in it. I had a good laugh looking at the styles in those days.
Hey sheena, yup i remember my faithful old robin hood t-shirt - think i wore it till it almost fell off my back - loved it to bits. would so love to see all your old photies of the good times we had - man, were they good!!! remember the holiday i stayed at your place when my mom went away and i didn't wanna go with? don't know how your folks put up with us. i can't think of your mom without remembering her going "sheena & i..." whenever i started saying "me and sheena". weird what stays in your head hey.
Hi Michele,
Yes, as Delia said, Leigh is the brother of Vanessa, who was a practicing advocate, but now works for her husbands business and lives in Joburg near her other brother Stirling, in Fourways. She also has a four year old daughter. I have recently been in contact with Stirling, and he furnished me with all their latest news. Here is her email address if you wanted to contact her.
vanessaw@vodamail.co.za
Hi Nicky,
Thank-you so much for her email address. My mom actually took over from Mrs Mcbride as secretary to the Personnel Manager back in the 80's and got to know Vanessa, can't quite remember what Vanessa was doing at the time - a bursar rings a bell somewhere in the back of my mind. I remember the name Stirling now as well - quite unusual. I will pass Vanessa's email address on to my mom as I'm sure she would like to make contact with her, my mom must've also known Leigh, or of him, and was sad to hear that he had passed away.
Hi Delia, You should pop in and visit my mom and look at the photos. She is now in Porterville - not too far from you. Funny, Paula also remembers the Sheena and I... thing. She also remember how we used to hate it when Sandy followed us around. Funny that her and Sandy are good friend today. Well, he got so tall and big that we were scared to shunt him around.
You were wondering where Gary Willson was, I think he is still in JHB area somewhere. Paula doesn't have much contact with him.
Please send your mother regards. Thinking of her, all I remember is the dogs that were fed peppermints.
Sheena, if ever i get up that way, i'll stop in at your mom. would be great to see her again. driving home last night, i was thinking how awesome it would be if me, you, jackie, paula, anne & natasha could get together - imagine the trip down memory lane we could take!! as i said to nicky, what one remembers, others have forgotten. natasha made contact with me thru my mom about 10 years ago and said she was coming thru to table view to see her aunt who owns a guesthouse there - she never arrived and haven't heard from her since. she was living in wellington then. talking of photos - remember how shaun (tasha's boet) used to drive us around in his bakkie with us all in the back - one sunday coming back from the beach, he decided to stop and pick a rose for jackie (i think he had the hots for her) and stopped at the bed of roses outside the main office block - i've got a photo of him and paula picking the company roses.
do you know what ever happened to tony & john vogel?
Nicky, i'll got thru my school photos and see if there's any worth scanning. be prepared to be afraid, very afraid.......... :D
Hey Delia,
I had forgotten about " The Pin Gang ", but clearly remember it now. All these things seem strange to us now, but at the time it was "cool ". It must have been something they put in our dental milk !!!
Thanks for jogging my memory with regards to the Jackie Wilson incident also. I am pretty sure that it was Mr.Esterhuizen . Sad to hear about Phillip Laubscher. Was he ill, or was it an accident? Any idea what happened to Kevin or Mark? I was really glad to hear that Ann and Andre are well and still happy. Yes, Ann was an awesome chick..... A very warm and genuine gal. What happened to her sisters Marie and Caroline? Did her folks Eddie and Nina go back to the UK?
Did you get married to an Oranjemunder? Anyone we may remember? Sorry it didn't work out. You do however seem happy and content, with your life ....... Good stuff !! I bet your'e a great Mom. I would love to see some photo's. If you don't want to post them on the forum, you could send them to my email address. Now that you mention it, I am a little anxious about seeing any old photo's. I looked like a real Dork ........ Beatles hair cut and all !!!!
What was Sheena's last name back in those days? I can remember Natasha's brother with his white bakkie, always chockers. I think most guys around Jackies' age had the hots for her ....... Me included ....... Shit, this sounds like "True Confessions". She always hung with the older '' cooler " guys, so the likes of me never stood a chance. LOL. Interesting that she now lives in Kleinzee. Is she still married to Noddy? How is Paula, ( I thought she ended up with Noel Gottsch ),and what happened to Julie and Greg Vice?
I last saw John Vogel in Hamilton, New Zealand, in about 1987. He came to visit us after we had just arrived there. He introduced his then pregnant girlfriend to us. She seemed like a very nice girl.
At the time, Tony and his sister were living in Auckland. I have had no contact since then. Do you remember the MacPhearsons? They used to drive those old fashioned Citroen cars? I wonder what happened to them. I have often wondered where Patrick McCarthy ended up also. I was good mates with him for a long time.
I will keep on racking my brains and try to unearth some more distant memories that I may have hidden away in these old vaults ....... Stay tuned.
You talking about Chris Mac Pherson .. stayed in 2nd ave ? If so he is somewhere in CT .. He worked at our firm for a few years then left ... I recall his Mom was at that stage in very poor health .. have had d no contact . but he has occasionaly dropped by to say Hi to his ex colleagues .. if I se him will pass on message ... Sandy
Hi Delia, we should arrange a reunion in Oranjemund. That would be fun!!
Nicky, my last name was Joubert and I was an extremely quiet and well behaved little girl!!
Ok, news on all the questions. Shaun and Irene le Roux are in Kleinzee and still happily married. They have 2 sons and a daughter.
Natasha seems to have fallen off the radar. My mom saw her in Wellington last year and said that she had gotten very old.
Paula and Noël are still married and have 3 sons. Jackie and Noddy are still married and have 2 daughters.
I have been married for 20 years and we have got a son and a daughter.
We have still got a few "old" Oranjemunders in town and it is great to get together and chat about "old times".
Nicky , don't believe a word Sheena's telling you, she has a permanent seat at the Bowling Club bar, always pissed and trying to pick up younger guys when her hubby ain't watching......!
;)
Mike, wait until I walk into Spar!!
Won't deny the permanent seat at the bowling club. It is extremely comfortable. I seem to remember that you also find some of the seat comfortable on some occassions!! Sure Michelle will back me here.
As for the younger men - shame they just can't help themselves!! I think Gavin is still scared off me after all these years. He seems to remember me chasing him with a knife when he was small.
Poor guy must have some issues with knives!!
What - Sheene pissed? Younger guys? Never!!!!!!!
She is the perfect role model!
PS
(Save me a seat Sheena!)
Should I be worried about the bowling club influence on my folks???
MIchelle, nothing to worry about. I am the perfect lady!!
Will save you a seat next to me.
Thanks - just don't tell Mike!
to you guys wondering what ever happened to chris mcpherson - he's living in the table view area - he has 2 daughters and his older daughter (must be about 11/12) does modelling with my daughter at figures modelling agency and every 2 months they have a show/competition to let us parents see how they're getting on - so of course i always see him then. to me he's still the same old chris that we all know. he's working for quality beverages (they make the jive cooldrinks). his mom passed away a while back. he himself was quite ill as well a while back - something to do with his heart, almost didn't make it.
sheena, ha - okay, we won't go down memory lane in toooo much detail here if you don't want to blow your cover, girl! we'll reserve those details only for those in the know!!!!! you had to be there! i think you and paula must load the car, stop by in kleinzee to fetch jackie and make your way down here for that reunion - don't forget the photos!
Nicky, as far as i know Julie & Greg are also in the UK. Not sure where Marie & Carolyn Jones are now - after I left school, they were both still in o'mund for a while. no, i didn't marry anyone you know, he was from cape town but yes i'm very happy now - my daughter and i have a great relationship, very close and of course headbut like all moms and teenage daughters but at the end of the day, it's all good. she keeps me busy busy busy - very into her sports - does soccer, softball and surfing - so with all that and her modelling, never a dull moment.
Phillip Laubscher - apparently his death was due to his pancreas packing in or something. at the time he was living in durbanville on a smallholding working for rainbow chickens. kevin i think is still in cullinan, married - got his blaster's certficiate a while back. saw markie a few years ago - not in a good way - life just getting him down - it was quite sad to see such an old friend going thru a hard time - haven't heard from him since.
it's actually quite weird how i came to anne that xmas - andre's cousin is married to my cousin so with all the families from each corner gathered for xmas, there was anne. magic seeing her again. at the time they were living in durbanville, not sure if they're still there.
likewise, if i unearth any more info & memories, will let you know. have magic weekend!
Thanks to Delia, Sheena and Sandy for the input on the whereabouts and fate of all the people I have asked about. If you could say a big hello to Chris MacPherson the next time you see him Delia, that would be great. I still have memories of him on one of those ( Help My Trap ) bikes ( It may have been a 50cc). They were also full on into the horse riding scene. I can also recall the leather belts and other accessories he used to fabricate. Good to hear about the surviving Laubschers too. Shame about Mark ....... I hope he gets it together.
Hey Mike, that stuff you mentioned about Sheena, it's all falling into place now ....... Sounds just like the Sheena Joubert I remember ........ He He, Moenie Worrie Nie, Sheena, I do remember you, and it is for all the right reasons. I remember you pretty much the way you described yourself back then. A responsible young lady. (Maybe Delia has a better memory than I, or was more privy to the goings on). I remember your Mom also. Did you end up marrying an Oranjemunder? Have you been living in O/mund all this time?
Have a choice weekend all !!
Nicky, Sheena is still living here, we're trying to get her to leave, we often offered her money and free groceries at Spar, but she just won't go, reckons she won't have any luck with the younger men on the outside, she knows the local boy's here are desperate..... hahahaha! ;)
ps.... I'll have to hide from her now when she comes to the shop, I'm not scared of her, really!
;D
Gee Mike,
I would be careful with comments like that ...... Remember, Sheena chases people with knives ...... We don't want you featured on " Lost Diamonds" just yet !!! He He. I hope Spar has some good hiding spots? ........
Delia, Caroline Jones married Andre du Toit and they living in Cape Town, not too far from Tygervalley, somewhere I do have Andre's Tel. no. Have seen them a numberof times at Tygervalley.
Clive, it was Anne that married Andre and they're living in Durbanville area. I remembered over the weekend that Carolyn married Pierre le Riche - don't know if they still together.
Hi Nicky, yes, I married a local. Garry du Toit. Don't know if you remember him as I only met him after school. He was part of the boertjies that we fought against in 1st avenue trees.
Mike, as for you... wait!!!
Hey Sheena, his name sounds familiar, but no, I cannot put a face to him. Please don't hurt Mike too much when you eventually corner him ...... we all need him. LoL.
Do any of you remember .... those horrible blue knickers that we had to wear and every morning one of the teachers would check that we had them on..... gross
and then those horrible blue hats (girls) and caps (boys) Say no more :-\ :-\
The school hats!!!, I'd forgotten about them Susan... that reminded me of "Fleckie" the little mongral that used to wonder around the school, the highlight of the day was teasing him with your cap, he'd bite on to it and never let go (I think your brother, Billy, specialised in this!!!)
Paul, i think my brother or should i say brothers specialised in a lot of things, like spending the most time at the office, etc.
Always said that i would never return to the school but funny thing is that i've been working here (Library) for the past three years. Nothing has changed much... still old boring rules.............
Aaaah Susan, now you're in the perfect position to undo the wrongs of the past (Mrs. Davies, the old librarian) through out the Dewy system, (and while you're at it the Huey and Louis system too) and impliment an actual alphabet system of finding books...
:)
At least we are not as strict as Mrs Davies, our library is veryyyyyyy noisy at times. Just replaced the carpet which has been in here for the past hundred years.
And there are still books from our time, shocking............
I know what you mean, I had a trip down memory lane last year when my girl was at opps, at a parent day she showed me one of her favourite books and I'll be damned if it wasn't my favourite book when I was at nursary school here... the same copy too.... all about a catapillar who ate and ate and ate and eventually turned into a butterfly... *sniff*
I remember the day they took all the Horror books out of the library - because it was inapropriat reading material. And they took the Noddy books away.
Hi Clair,
I was just wondering if you sent the info from my email on to your Dad? Have you managed to scan those old photos yet? I'm looking forward too seeing them. Thanks!
Hi Nicky
I printed out your letter - he laughed.
I promise I will get photos off him tonight.
Delia I remember a lot of this,
especially having to drink the milk when it was warm after been stored next to the drain in the sun, the drain was probably the most flourinated drain in the whole world.
I also remember your mom asking me to talk you into staying at school and finishing matric, I cannot remember if you did or not.
Barbara Fry
Hey Barbara, wow - i've often thought about you over the years - remembering all our hostel days - yes, i did finish matric (jeez, do i remember that whole sage, wanted to drop out in std 9 and do correspondence), thank goodness i had the sense to stay. even in the rebellious days of mine, somewhere a little sense crept in and made me realise the stupidity of the whole idea.
Delia, excellant
I have tons of photos in storage somewhere, in my mom's garage probably
I am in Uk so promise you are all safe until my next trip, Feb 08 when I may have time to collect some.
Love to your sister, what happened to Marcelle?
Remember the debarcle involving the sisters, Glenda someone, sorry my minds going. They returned to school after intersepting the post
informing there parents they had been expelled.

I can remember all my teachers - I wonder how long they were there after 1966:
Sub A - Miss Malherbe
Sub B - Mrs Castle (she used to bang you on your head with two fingers it you were not quite up to standard!)
Std 1 - Miss Pienaar
Std 2 - Miss Burgess
Std 3 - Mrs Coffin
Std 4 - Miss C Smit
Std 5 - Miss C Smit
Mr Venter was the Principal and Mr Dickenson the Deputy
Mr Steyn used to teach us joined up writing very precisely - light strokes up, dark strokes down
does anyone remember Mrs Place ??
Mike Burgess has a sister. They both live here still! ANy link to Miss Burgess?
???
what happened to the little shed on the rugby field behind the bicycle shed?
I think someone smoked too many cigerrettes in there and it burnt down?
anyone?
It was used to store big string bags of foam, ideal for sneaking away in.
My teachers - lets get the gray matter going!
Principal - Doc Venter
Sub A - Miss Travis
Sub B - Who else - Mrs Castle
Std 1 - Miss Fourie
Std 2 - Mrs Place
Std 3 - Miss Style (Later Mrs de Jager - beautifull woman - school boy crush - most probably why I failed)
Std 3 - Miss Fourie
Std 4 - Mrs Tromp (nee Hawkens)
Std 5 - Mr Dickinson
Art - Mrs Solomon
Woodwork: Mr Dickinson - Zanti stood in for him at the end of 68. Zanti was also a brilliant history teacher. I use the similar technic today to teach my daughter history when she asks me to explain some history for her.
We had Mr Steyn for Afrikaans in Std 5 - who can remember the Afrikaans poems he tought us? - "Die Muskiet" and "Die Ossewa". He married a Chec nursing sister and if I can remember he had a very good knowledge of stamps and collection and eventually used his stamp tallent to become a very big shot in the designing and making of South African stamps in Pretoria.
What can I say - Oranjemund had very good teachers.

The "compulsory" intake of fluoride via half vrot luke warm milk in a plastic container! I think the grass must still be green from the many accidental slips when opening the lid.
Oh, those barnies. I still recall one barney challenge between myself and Neville Smith clearly - it was to take place after school on the cricket field. Never got there - I followed Neville and his patriots through the little alley next to the st. 5 classes and just before he could exit I knocked him into a semi goo-goo state (the best swing of a 'moerse skooltas' loaded with all the books that could fit into it) - centre shot, right to the back of his head! I reckoned I had won, so I took off with the speed of white light. His sister, Veronika, got back at me for that - nearly drove a blunt 'passer' point through my thigh in the Afrikaans class. Also had a slight barnie with Simon Mason in the geography class when Mrs Wilson (I think it was her) was out - soaked him in the eye when he tried to kick my shin off for shooting a guy called Stephen with a chewed up piece of paper and an elastic band (remember those kettie things). One of the Laubscher boys then sort of ordered us to take up a full barnie, but Mrs Wilson stopped it - I think she knew I would be killed - Simon was about twice my size!
Sorrie, Neville - ek huil 'n ou papnat vandag as hy my so met 'n koffer oor die kop moet slaan! Sorrie, Stephen - never ment to hurt you on purpose. Sorry Simon - never ment to have the "boys" call you feeble for letting me hit you in the eye - actually you were a gentleman for not hitting back, BUT - you did try to kick, so what was I to do? I promise - I stay out of barnies these day's (whenever I can).

Hi Dalene, since you mention it,you were a scary creature at times, what is Leon doing with himself nowadays.last i saw him was in Windhoek a couple of years ago at the court.Yes,your dad was a legend in Oranjemund, who will ever forget the times he got called out for a disturbance, then joined the party himself, heheh.

I was also a "Boere Meisie" in an Opperetta called "Soetkoek"1968 my only theatrical performance.
You should remember that Cherry, sure you were also a "Boere Meisie" in green if I'm not mistaken. 8)
Now there's an achievement few can compete with....... to still have your report card from way back then. Keep it so you can eventually show your great-grandchildren how well granny fared at school - in the day way back then. Might be an ispiration to them and a challenge to better what the 'gran' had done.
;) ;D :D
Hard grey report card, you say ------ jissie, are you sure it's not one of those hyrogliphic slates whith chisseld inscriptions? Mos many, many moons ago you went to school. (Only joking)
I do remember it Diana and remember how horrified I was that I had to wear green. I think I have a photo somewher which I'll dig out when I get back from the UK.
Granny didn't fare very well just managed to get through each year.It was probably due to the bone we had to chissel down as a pen and the rock slate was always a problem.
That hard cover report card was actualy a book that took you right through to Std 5. Also had your height and weight for each year. We'd all line up at the back of the stage for the big weigh in. So now I can also show the grandkids how tall and Fluffy I was. :D
Dianna , Soetkoek yes I was one of the farmer reaper klutzes in the front who kept on getting his sickle tangled with the person next to me ...
Diana, i also still have all my report cards from Sub A-Std5, music reports, athletics and swimming certificates - thanks to my mom who kept things like that for all of us throughout the years. Was actually looking at them all just the other night - so cool to go back in time and reminisce. Also have all my highschool ones too - drastic change from junior to high school - at lightning speed from good girl to rebel without a cause........ :D
I remember that weighing us all business in the hall up on the stage - hated it 'cos i was quite a plump kid at junior school and was very self conscious about it - them weighing us in front of everybody didn't help matters either......... >:(
That should be a hoot Cherry,us in those stupid hats.I remember the green well as NO-BODY wanted to wear green.I wore blue,I probably sulked and wouldn't play if I didn't.Delia I only have the report 'cos I didn't get any certificates :'(I've also kept all my childrens goodies from their school days, they at least got certificates.Sandy so that was you,the guy next to you never took to the stage again. He could have been a budding actor. ;D

When my teacher was Mrs Castle I had the pleasure of sharing the desk/table with her son, Philip. That could be a bit scarey! Poor lad, she had even higher standards for him
Mrs Castle passed away late 90's , She and husband Cassie retired and lived in Melkbos strand . near to Coeberg poiwer station .They wer our neighbours in O'mund. . they stayed at 18 , 15th ave
her son was killed on the Angolan border approx 1980 . I am not shure , its a long time ago .

I remember the one good thing about "skollie Patrolie"was that you caught a seperate bus to everyone else and even though your bus left after the big busses, you always got home first.
And... you got to leave the class 10 minutes before the rest.....
;D
I remember Mrs Castle- she terrified me. I think most kids in her class felt the same way
I remember the name Castle, but I'm not sure if I'm thinking of the right person. What did she teach?
EVERYTHING. from 1964 taught me way back then.
was she a curley, elderly woman (in 70s) wearing glasses? was she a "loud" person?
Hi Georg Jnr
If you look on the home page under OPS photos you will see her on one or two of the school photos
do you have the link to ops?

I remember that well. I salso remember drinking lots of the beauvelon milk. Very tasty. Nowhere near the milk you get here.
Yes it was a Messerschmidt .. there were two of them tootling around the town .. the other unusual one was the BMW Isetta that the De Pintos had .. the door opened from the front of the car and then everyone clambered in it could seat 3 at a push ...
My first day in Sub A. This photo was taken in front of E5/11. Note the big plastic house badge we wore before the small metal ones.

horrah, for Diane. Well done
The hat was my flash memory in that picture.
forgotten all about it ......... They aged badly but were so much more comfortable when softened up and worn out
My mom always ironed the front flap of the hat down. Why,the Lord only knows. As young as we were ,we knew we looked like dorks.
I got the sizing a bit small, wanted to show that hugh plastic house badge we wore back then.
Mike I haven't quite mastered the art yet,so will be throwing you dead with oop'ses first THEN the shower of picture postings.I might add I had never been on a computer untill this forum started, now well............you stuck with me I'm afraid.
..... and Diana, nobody's complaining...post away....
Those hats!!! Mine used to be in a permanent state of "flatness"- just stashed it into my schoolcase with all the books and closed the lid. My mom tried to steam and starch it at some stage just to get it back into some acceptable shape again, but I buggered up all her hard work again by the next afternoon.
Re the pictures of school as seen by Mike.
Thank you, I agree the new colour scheme is beautiful - the library seems to me to be exactly the same, I remember it being new in my day.
The hall looks very shiny, and I like the blue - I was in Oppenheimer, but think that the color is relaxing and must be very cool in the light of day with the sun beating down.

Mike its simple, calculate your BMI and you see where you stand.
There is 2 ways to improove that
1) Reduce the weight
2) Increase your hight
Which ever ist the easy whay i dont know.
Lucky enough my BMI ist just above 20, no use to grow any more altought i would have needed that
I am a short a....s
An aid to Napoleon said
"Sir should i get that book from the shelf for you since i am greater"
Napoleon being also a short a...s replied
"No son youre only taller not greater"
That shows the differnece between tall and great
I liked that a an extreme short a..s german He he he he
If anyone is interested how to calculate the BMI just let me know
Its a formula revolving around Tall and kg´s
Thanks George but I just look in the mirror to go into a fog of depression!

Diana - send me the names of those happy pills..... (Where do I apply for the boobs ?????? I ain't got none of them, just enough arse and ............... why the hell should I sit and spell all the things out here about which I'm not happy on myself with? ------------ you all gonna need happy pills after that)
I am happy - I am happy - I am happy
@ Mike - no - you aint fat - your body has just horizontally broadened it's own horizons, to keep track with the way your mind has developed over the years.
Who needs Pamela Anderson. You might as well have a rubber doll... :emot19:
We are NOT too short or too tall; we are NOT too fat or too thin, we are fantastic babes and everyone wants to be us cause we are O'mund kids!!! If you say that every morning and every night, I can gaurantee it will put a grin on your face..........that and the happy pills Diana has!!!
Thanks Rhona!
Actually I am very happy with myself just the way I am. I am healty, I am alive, I can hear, I can see, I can walk, I can talk, I can sing, I can dance, I can eat, I can drink, I can laugh, I can cry, I can feel the sunshine on my skin, I can look at the stars at night, I can............. et infinitum.
I did not create myself, for if I did, I would be a freak (like them plastic dolls George jnr talks about). No thank you. I accept myself the way I am and make the best of what I have and I am gratefull that I am able to do just that. I have small picksy ears and at some stage in my life I was very shy about it, but I came to the conclusion that I have to be gratefull for the ones I have, for there are people who has no ears at all. I don't have the most beautifull legs on the earth, but I have legs and they are in good working order and carry me wherever I need to go.
So, all the moaning is just in good humor. I might need those happy pills though - would like to hand them out to all the people out there in the world who has only had unhappiness in their lives - even if it could only put a smile on one face for just one time!
Makes me think of some of the words of the song Soridi:
We all have days that overwhelm us
and we just feel like giving in.
But raise a smile and face the challenge
and you can leave the loniless behind.
......
......
Smile, when you are lonely
even when it's harder to pretend.
Smile, a little only
knowing that your tears will have an end
Soridi esente la muche,
comme illuminada vitae.
Smile and watch your troubles drift away.
Just smile and you can face another day

Now lets be good children and stay on the topic. I know it's dreadfull one gets so easily side tracked
Yep - the schooldays at OPS. When we wuz kids there - and where Koos most likely never was - and when we had ponytails askew. (Hopefully not the boys).
Your moms ever pleat ribbons into your hair for school? I remember when I used to be smaller classes my mom used to pleat my hair in the morning with ribbons - like Pippie Langkous - and fold those pleats double to tie the ribbon in a bow. How the hell did the hat fit on my head? Later when I had to brush and tie my own hair - just made one pony at the back of my head - half the time the hair not even brushed out properly - and off to school I went.
Daleeeeeeeene!!!!!! Just saw the photo. Can't believe it, now I know who you are. You have just made my year.
So glad you liked it! If you want, I could make a copy of the photo and get it to you by mail, or just give it to you when I go to Kimberley again?
Mike have posted some photo's from the bullitins here that I am also hysterical about.... never knew there was a photo of the tennis team. Also saw some photo's from the old bullitins from when we were on the trip to Windhoek for the Eistedford = taken in die Kokerboomwoud near Keetmanshoop etc. Laughed my head off ..... downloaded some of them onto my computer
Please make a copy and bring with you to Kimberley to that I can give you a hug. Was that Deborah Luke on the photo with us?
I can't remember her surname, but now that you mention Luke, it seems to ring a bell. Also can't remember the girl Edana's surname?? I think some of them were older than we were - like Hannelie van Rooyen - she used to be in class with my brother - 2 ys ahead of us.
I was in Deborah Luke's class, I think I was 2 years ahead of you. Std 1 = 1971, 2 = 1972, ...., 5 = 1975.
Yes - was in st. 5 in '77.
What a stupid thing - I was always to young for my standard - could'nt even go to the teenage dance at the end of my st. 5 year (and the saddest of all -- I was asked very nicely by a boy whose name I cannot even rememer - had to tell him : Sorry, not old enough to go yet.........) notfair
We (the Jonkers) lived across the road from Mrs Castle and I had her for Sub B and I do remember various children wetting their pants in sheer fear of her. I well remember the bubble car she had (we always hoped it would tip over). I also remember my brother Richard going to play with Philip Castle and my sister Melanie and I being afraid he would never come out alive and throwing stones at their gate telling them to let our brother free!! I wonder if Mrs Castle really was that bad or was it just all in our childlike minds?
I was scared of her, make no mistake..... Brrrrr! I'm shivering as I type this....
barb1
Yep! She was one of most feared teachers at school. I was glad not to have had her... yesno
Boy oh boy was I scared of her !!! Might have something to do with being hauled over the coals by her as a very small scared 7 year old for dashing across the "road" (it was in the school parking area - not sure if that is still there??) in front of her bubble car.
Yikes - I was PETRIFIED of her for the rest of my life.
Oh the joys of school days - such fun.
Enjoy your day.
Patricia
Mrs Castle didn't like Deborah Luke, I think it was because her Mom was so mod. I remember her grabbing Deborah by the shoulders and shaking her like mad. I think that ruined OPS for Deborah, she really didn't seem to be happy there.
Mrs Castle moaned at me for colouring my lamb in light blue. I couldn't colour it in white and I didn't want to colour it yellow, otherwise it looks dirty, so I coloured it light blue like the surf washing powder advert. She shouted: "Have you ever seen a blue sheep before." If only she had asked why, I could have explained. But apart from that, she actually wasn't that bad, I think her bark was worse than her bite.
Susan, do you remember that ridiculous costume we wore in a play at OPS? Wizard of Oz?? We had balls of cotton wool stuck all over us. With that hilarious head gear!!! Mrs Wilson was in it too. Nadine Wade, Conyers kids, Vicky Wainman(?) etc etc
I still have a copy of the Newsletter from February 1967 where Michael Shearer and I were on the front cover all dressed up in our brand new school uniforms outside the school. Does anyone know what happened to the Shearers? They lived in 1st Avenue next to the Symes I think, just up the road from us (Jonkers). His Mum's name was Yvonne and he had a sister whose name escapes me. I would try to scan and send the pic but it is rather faded as you can imagine!
Hey guys. Time to shut this topic. I dreamt of Mrs. C. last night. She drove her car into the garage. Frightened me for a second. hihi But then she was gone. Wheh!
laughpoint
@ Teel my folks new the Sheares well will ask my mom. I remember their house in 1st well and I'm think you right they were next door to the Symes? CLIVE?
clive lived very near me....but i dont remember in which direction.......Does anyone remeber a girl who was called something that sounded like....errkie....they used to tell me it meant small pea......she lived next door to me and did have sisters ....but i donr remeber the real names......
In all probabilty from the the Dames family .. one of my defining moments .. will post that story sometime under the english afrikaner gangs and fights .. indeed a defining moment where I stared to learn to stay away from the thick of looking at whowe were and what language we spoke .. not easy ..
Mrs Castle was a not all bad - I seem to remember that she did not like it if you either failed in something did something wrong in her class that she would "go off the deep end" and rap you across the knuckles with her ruler - more than one if she was very cross (saw many a ruler broken during this procedure) - the good side of her behaviour was that she had a high pass rate - too scared to fail - so I think that maybe she had very high standards and expected all under her control to meet her expectations - after hours she was a very likeable person and I had very few problems with her - I used to visit their house a lot (Peter C and myself were good friends in those days). Teel give Richard my regards.
In the dark clouds shining
there's a silver lining.
Turn that lining inside-out
and...
Hi Angus, I will definitely give Richard your regards. I was speaking to my Mum and Dad last week and they both remember you and Sandy very well. It brought back lots of memories for my Dad just mentioning about Oranjemund and it got him telling me lots of stories I hadn't heard before. Took me back to sitting in our lounge, my Dad in his big leather chair telling us stories as he sliced off bits of biltong and fed it to each of us kids while we listened enthralled at his feet. Those were the good old days before TV!! My children can't get their heads around the fact that I grew up with no TV!.
Teel, pls share some of your dad's stories... those are just the memories we are looking for in here...they might remind others of something....

SEE!.... maybe if you never drank chemically adjusted Fluoride Beavallon Cow Milk, you would have been able to REMEMBER all their names?
:nono1:
Here is a few snaps from us kids drinking THAT MILK back in the 70's, I currently am missing 4 teeth in my mouth, how did you fare??
:wow1:
Dental Milk1 - Thomas Schilling (Blondie) Leila-Anne Daves (ponytail), Susan Lineker Kintscher (clip in hair) Mark Railton
Dental Milk2 - Robbie Buchanan (i think)
Dental Milk3 - Bradley Quinton & Chris Jones (i think)
and the blondie in pic 3 could be Scott Walace
Still got all me own teeth. sorriso2
Hi Diana
See what healthy teeth can do! I do remember the project well and it was quite an achievement in those days! Go well - to all the smileys of the sixties
The third photo has Mark Bishop, Scott Wallace, Gillian Thurtell, Stephanie Carr, Me and Vicky Linekar
Now I recognise you Patricia.
The fellow in the far left corner, an Adrian??
