Now here is a thing
I have a pencil portrait of myself done in 1968 (I was 5) and I can remember going down to the rec club and having to sit in this vast empty room while this visiting artist draw me. (and my sisters)

I also remember during this early period huge fancy dress events, and flower arranging competitions.  I am sure we have slides somewhere and will look for them when next in CT

We still get visiting artists that come up here, but they sell paintings and do a few exhibits...... The cameraman comes from WHK to do the OPS portraits

I have a story about Bill Fry, as you know he was the photographer in town.

His pictures were often used for official company business as the owned them as he was employed, anyway .......One year there was a competition
and he was summonsed to participate in Windhoek.

He drove up to Windhoek with his assistant and on the way come across a road traffic accident, and this sparked an idea, so he collected the shattered glass from the windows and placed them in a tin with some sand and the assistant shook the tin during the hours and hours drive.

He then emptied the tin into this mans hand and took a picture and called it - diamonds harvested or something like that.

It's a great handful of fairly uniform sized 'stones' and I think there was a price attached to it.

I guess Bill had the last laugh.

I remember those fancy dress events. Theresa Solms's mom"Sylvia" used to go to great lengths to dress us up. Theresa won one year as a space type girl, still got her photo on the cover of the newsletter back in about 1965
O.P.S -1969, Springfield Convent -1970, Holy Cross Convent-1972., Centaurus-1974
I got around.

The school prize-giving was also held at the Rec club. I still have the book prize I got in Std 2. Use it to brag to my children otherwise they would never believe I did well at school, they think I am senile.
