Old Oranjemunders from the 70's, I got my hand on the newsletters for 1977, but it;s just a lot of typing, and no pics. I do not think it's worthwile at this stage to scan these, Do you agree? And in the 70's did you guys get weekly newsletters as well as a monthly photo type newsletter?

Anyone?

???

ps, i was around then, but I could'nt read till  I went to boarding skull!   :D  ;)

My fathers brother, Bill Fry was the editor of the newsletter in those days.  Yes there were photos, as I remember.
Bill's wife Martha was a nurse at the hospital, really stern and strict, an old school matron type.
Bill retired to Kraaifonteyn but passed away about 8 years ago.
Visiting the printing works was really cool as a kid, an honor afforded family I guess.

Hi Barbara,

I can remember old " uncle " Bill as we used to call him. He would be at all the O/mund events, large or small, clicking happily away like a man possessed. I'll never forget that day at the Mule Derby when he was trampled by the horse and buggy. I can't recall the exact events, but after the dust had settled, it was evident that he had gone under the horse or both horse and buggy. Ouch! Sorry to hear that he has passed on. I am not sure if you are the Barbara Fry that was in my class in primary school or not? I recall having both a Barbara and Margaret Fry in my class, but there seemed to be so many Fry girls around in those days, that it has become a little confusing. Maybe you can help push that " refresh" button?

barb (Fry)

Nicky
that was me and Margaret, my cousin, Bill's daughter.
We were seperated in std 2, I think.(because we were to competative apparently.)
I sure remember the day at the mule derby, Bill was always snapping away between drinking large amounts and getting pissed.
That day he was pissed and took a bet, there were plenty of novice jockeys racing, for a prize of whatever.
He come off and was kicked badly.  In the head and ribs as I remember.
Margaret and I ran to the hospital to warn them that he would be along in the ambulance.
On arrival, Martha was on duty and really showed no sympathy.
I believe her words were, "donder, you bloody stupid old fool, what were you thinking"
You were always very jumpy if I remember correctly.

Hi Barbara,
Thanks for putting all things "Fry" in sync for me. The memories tend to dim as time marches on. I do recall Bill used to like his drink, and obviously had one too many that day at the Mule Derby. I had to laugh at your recollection of Martha's reaction upon his arrival at the hospital ....... Sounds just like Martha, LOL.
Oh yes Barbara, I did have a nervous disposition back then, didn't I, LOL. I'm much improved these days, but trust me, the wife still takes advantage of my " Timidness", and never tires on the endless search of possibilities to scare the crap out of me when I'm least expecting it. She has a few stories to tell, I'm sure. Hey, do you have any school photos of us back in primary school?, only I have very few, and would love to show my kids what the old fart looked like when he was just a mere boy. It would be really great if you could scan them (if you have any?), and email them to my address.
Thanks.

Hey Nick

if I recall I have class photos a plenty.
should definitely be able to collect on next visit to CT
unless I get it together to have them shipped out between now and then

The old Newsletters are out of this world memory boosters!!!!!

Thanks to everybody who contibuted - excellent job.  (Wonder if anyone can give feedback about the results of ads that were posted in the Newsletters way back then, i.e. "House for sale" or even from someone who had responded on an add like that and had bought that "House for sale", "Car for sale" etc.  Who made use of the gardening tips?  Who kept recipies and still use them today?  Did they cut out photo's and kept them in an album?)

Cheryl Quantrill (van Greunen)

My mom, Pat van Greunen, used to work for Bill Fry.  I remeber visits to her office and Bill was always very friendly.  I remember Martha as well.  I will never forget how sweet she was to me when I attended a  party at her place.  I had gone to a friends house straight after school ( without my dad's permission)  By 2pm he was out looking for me and found me on the corner outside the assissant GM's house  I was duely taken home, gievn a good thrashing. It was the same day as a birthday party at the Fry's.  I arrived with red eyes and red wheels across the back of my legs. Martha was sympathetic and made all the right noises that made me feel better.
