Mike's gout has appeared in 21 topics, so here is a space for all relevant advice and moaning about pain.

Mike I'm sure you have done your homework on the condition and I'm sure the docter has advised you, only you can make the changes needed
recurrent gout is bad news, boet caused damage to the joint surfaces and that means more symptoms and loss of function eventually. Arthritis. That is no fun as it's permanent.

I did some research and can add that salmon is high in puritins so should be avoided.

You need to eat high alkaline foods to encourage the kidneys to expel the uric acid, avoid paracetomol and aspirin. Especially during an acute attack.

you need to drink water, 8 glasses a day. There is no cheating on this - water is water, coffee and tea are not water.  Alcohol doesn't count as it causes dehydration, and you need to hydrate and dilute the acid. Prevention of acute gout involves maintaining adequate fluid intake, weight reduction, dietary changes, reduction in alcohol consumption, and medications to reduce hyperuricemia.  (increased uric acid levels)

Unfortunately Mike lurves beer and braai............not good for his condition, salmon might not be good for gout but it's good for arthritis as it contains a lot of essential oils............loads of water, maybe someone can swop his beer for water............wonder would he notice!!!

Hey Mike, see the way we are all minding you...........

Rhona, yes Salmon is high in omega 3 oils, which are good for us and our joints, but it's the purines that are bad for the build up of uric acid and gout.

When cells die and get recycled, the purines in their genetic material also get broken down. Uric acid is the chemical formed when purines have been broken down completely. It's normal and healthy for uric acid to be formed in the body from breakdown of purines. In our blood, for example, uric acid serves as an antioxidant and helps prevent damage to our blood vessel linings, so a continual supply of uric acid is important for protecting our blood vessels.
Uric acid levels in the blood and other parts of the body can become too high, however, under a variety of circumstances. Since our kidneys are responsible for helping keep blood levels of uric acid balanced, kidney problems can lead to excessive accumulation of uric acid in various parts of the body. Excessive breakdown of cells can also cause uric acid build-up. When uric acid accumulates, uric acid crystals (called monosodium urate crystals) can become deposited in our tendons, joints, kidneys, and other organs. This accumulation of uric acid crystals is called gouty arthritis, or simply "gout."

My Fellow Oranjemunders, thanks for all the PM's , but I aint dying...... I have suffered from gout for the last 13 Years and have researched it through and through. I have been to a specialist and know exactly what needs to be done to get myself cured...... The problem is , I am a lazy bast*rd and love braaing, watching rugby and drinking tons of beer, a lifestyle choice of mine..... in essence DIET, Excercise and moderation are the cures... and like Barbara says, get rid of the purines and you get rid of the gout.... you'll be surprised at how many foods contain purines.... I have a purine chart/table... but lifes good around the braai....

I have had discussions on this topic with at least 200 people over the last 13 years, and in fact i actuall bootleg medication on the side for pocket money to the masses. Here in Omund there are at least 80 regular Ovambo's that I deal with, who suffer from the condition, the starnge thing is , when they go back to Ovamboland they are gout free, when in Omund they suffer.

I had a chat  with a lady who's father also suffers badly . She was on the net and is a chemical analyst.... her theory revolves around drinking water quality......

As quite a few of you know, Gout is very sore and I suffer from it in my knee's and ankle... However after seeing a specialist , I am now on a good regiment of medication and have not been incapacitated for the last 8 months..... which is brilliant for me.......

I guess at times I like to play on it and dramatize it...... in closing, thanks for all the advice and your concern, just as one would expect from the ORANJEMUND community.... wherever you are....
