i can't tell you how much i miss that - having gemmies around me as tho' it's the most natural thing in the world - makes me think how i took it for granted while living there, not realising how privileged i actually was............

That's true Delia.
We at least see some deer in the forest now and then. They're very shy. So they're usualy of in a hurry.
In very seldom cases, we might catch a glimps of a fox or boar. Where as foxes are usualy spread over the country roud... Pity!

Thank you for the photos Alfred! I lived in Oranjemund 1976 to 1981 and when I tell my children stories from my teenage years I always talk about the Gemsbok. Now I can actually show them - and prove I wasn't making it all up. I was always terrified of bumping into gemsbok in the night on the way back from "sessions" and other "activities". I walked many a long way round just to avoid a face to face meeting.

I remember a guy living down the road from  us (can't remember his name), he was so scared walking down the road at night after scouts he would sing as load as he could all the way home.... hihihi

We had a rep in town for the Bakery at Spar, one night he had  a bit much to drink and was wandering back to the guesthouse, ( he was recounting this story to us the following morning), anyhow he got loast and he reckons he was wandering around in the midnight mist somewhere in the middle of town, drunk, he was tired and cold and reckons to us he saw the statue in the middle of town, so he walked over and proceeded to lean against it to catch his breath, imagine his shock when the said statue bolted into the mist...it was in fact a gemsbok... to this day, we don't know who got the biggest fright.....

I recall when we lived in 7outer cres,  Susan had gone to a party at Jackie and Leslie Meyers house just down the road. She had gone without parents knowledge and i went at after midnight to go and get her. I was not happy going into this party so sat at the gate wishing she would come out. Isat there for quite some time, i felt something behind me and when i turned there stood a gemsbok vertually on top of me, i nearly jumped over the gate. I ran to the door and knocked and shirley Watson answered and was very horrible to me now i know why i didn't want to go in. I screamed for susan to come and we made our way back home. That was the scariest time of my life.
