Kenny what can you tell me about this,

BEDROCK BLAST OUT OF ORANJEMUND

Formed as a quartet in 1994 in Oranjemund, a small village in the southern area of the Namib Desert in Namibia, the group set out doing rock 'n roll and blues covers. Happy to be a bunch of part-time "older" rockers, they are content to live with the "garage band" label and pretend to be nothing more. Since its inception there have been regular changes to the line-up although two of the original members in Eddie Heusdens (drums) and Pete Shout (bass) survive. Axeman, Kenny Ramage, has also been around for a long while whilst the fourth member is presently being replaced. The band's first CD release in 2000 was an album of covers, however, they have generated an ever increasing amount of original material with their last two CD releases containing only material written by the band. Their 2001 release, RECOVERY, received critical acclaim whilst their latest release, SO, WHERE'S THE PARTY?, is due for release on 31 January, 2003. The band plays up and down the Namibian and South African west coasts but makes occasional forays into the larger centres such as Cape Town.

Oranjemund, according to all who live, work or visit there, is Namibia's
best kept secret. It's a smallish mining town under the collective
patronage of NamDeb (Namibia De Beers) and most who live there are involved
with the mine is some way or another. It's not known as a big rock music
town, but recently some of its more mature citizens have been making a huge
racket and inspiring the younger rockers to do the same. Bedrock is a
four-piece band comprising Pete Shout, Kenny Ramage, Mike Millad, and
Eddie. They play the occasional live gig and recently found the time to
fashion their debut rock album, 'Recovery'.

Seeing as Oranjemund does not have a full, state-of-the-art recording
studio, 'Recovery' was produced in slightly lower-key surroundings (see the
sleeve for clues). It tips its hard-hat most prominently to the rock sounds
of the '70s and celebrates rock's history, and its effects on the
band-members, in the album's opening track, 'Rock And Roll Man'. Here all
those seminal rock heroes get name-checked and honoured in a sort of
'Namibian Pie' way.

But the rest of the album is a mixture of original rock songs performed by
a group of older rockers who clearly realize and accept that an NME
correspondent is unlikely to pitch up in the near future, but don't care at
all. Sometimes the joy is purely in the writing, recording and releasing of
music from the heart, and of course, getting to play it with your (band)
mates. Doesn't matter where you are, or how old you are. (SS)

I have heard about them.  Yep, Kenny, spill the beans.  What happened to the band?  Are you guys still at it?  Who spreads the CD's for you and where can it be found?

Hi Barbara ~

The article you have posted originally appeared in the South African Rock Digest on 13 August, 2001, the same week that one of  Bedrock's original compositions - "Rock 'n Roll Man" - peaked at No 14 in the independent South African Rock Music charts.  This was one of Kenny Ramage's many superb compositions and was followed into the charts a couple of years later by "Crowd Invasion".  Although Kenny's sublime skills were lost to the band when he left Orasnjemund, the band continues to thrive and are currently busy with our fourth album planned for release in April/May 2008.

As Michael has already advised, there is a link from his site.  You can also follow the band's fortunes and activities at:

Hi Barbara ~

I'm sure, all things being equal, that we'd be more than happy to put in an appearance during your Reunion event.  I must stress, however, that we are not and have never intended to be a function band (weddings, barmitzvahs, family occasions etc).  We adhere pretty strictly to classic and contemporary rock so we recognise that we are not everybody's "cup of tea".  Having said that, I think we have a reputation for knowing how to make a party and, besides, the more you drink the better we sound!!   We're just a bunch of part-timers in a garage band trying to have fun and contribute to the quality of life in good old Oranjemund.

Damn! and I was going to throw a barmitzvah next weekend.......    laughpoint  What about Currie cup Victory Braai's?

I don't even bother calling out the band for those occasions because you're so quick at jumping over my fence it would be a waste of time.  Just make sure when you gatecrash this season it's with a barrel of beer on your back and a Stormers or Province jersey on your chest!  Those are the only colours my brand new rottweilers recognise!!!  Anything in orange is, for them, instant takeaways...even though they hate the taste of gout...
