Who can remember the rugby matches Appies v High School boys?

In 1972 the high school children beat the appies and 1973 was going to be a revenge match according to the appies which eventualy got so bad that Steve Meyer (to do with rugby) banned the game.

He said that the high school boys should rather play 7s rugby against each other.
And as it went in those days we decided to play English v Afrikaans.

The English Team consisted of:

Forwards: Rainer Siebers; Keith Margetts + Myself
Backs: David Eyre; Brain Eyre; Stephen Huntley and Jeff Quinton

The Afrikaans Team: Johan de Polla; Hyeman - I am not to sure of the rest because they hardly played because we ran rings around them. Steve Meyer, whose son played in the Afrikaans team, was very pissed off.

Needless to say the following year they reverted back to the Appies v High School fomat.

Reiner Siebers works in Rosh Pinah now, and is here every 3 rd weekend or so, he knows about this site, but keeps forgetting about it....... great money collection though.....

I played in one of those games, not pretty, very violent.... I remember as a schoolboy , somebody's mother running onto the field swinging a handbag at one of the Apppies for moering her baby.....

Hi Mike,

Yes Rainer and I keep in regular contact, I will be seeing him next Saturday here in Cape Town.
We have been friends since April 1961 - like a brother to me.

Hey Oppie,

I remember that rugby game very well . . . we pushed those guys right off the ball every scrum (I don't think they got a ball, except from the kick-off) and the Eyres ran rings around the Afrikaans lads in the backline - it was an absolute massacre!!

I don't recall playing in any further games . . . probably because I was at University . . . I think I changed to pitcking in baseball?

I used to watch those matches just to see David Eyre pass the ball.Such a sexy ballpasserer. Did a little wiggle thing with his hips.Still in contact with David and Bev his in Botswana now and a granddad.

Yes that was my last game for the school boys as well, the following year I had to do my military service.

I played in only one of those games in the 80's... got ugly... but I do remember the crowd at about 200 plus.... And us Schoolboys upset a few people when we beat the appies... I also remember Derek Swanepoel getting quite upset about something.....
