Hi All
Remember those humungerous samies and the cheap cooldrinks.

Goof, you really are giving away your age - 5c for a sandwich!!!!! But yah, I remember her super sarmies - dripping with mayo on thick slices of white bread - jees, they were divine. My dad used to bribe me to go to church on a sunday by promising to take us for cooldrinks & ice cream at cora's afterwards.  I'd drag myself out of bed not to miss a visit to cora's.  Then after a lunchtime braai at the beach every sunday, we'd head back there for supper.  Do you remember at the end of the counter, there was the "small sweets" section with those 2 huge glass lids that flipped up - they had gaps between them which easily accommodated little fingers????

I remember the glass counters, they were always getting cracked... also the sherbet... I used to love the stuff... oh and the little sets of plastic vampire teeth wrapped around a packet of sweets... all in that counter they were... and Dinner at Cora's.. always sausage egg and chips for me (does anyone remeber the brass picture imprints she had on the walls in the restaurant). My dad says that in the early days of the restuarant, if you wanted steak or any other such luxuary, you had to place your order a couple of days inadvance so she could get the meat...

And we think service is slow these days  ;D

The name of the waiter was daniel, and you could easily get your long arms over that glass counter , (if nobody was looking), oops!

I remember Daniel - he was such a honey.  I'm sure cora knew about the odd sweet going missing but turned a blind eye.  Paul, those brass pictures are ringing a bell - they were in the "larney" area that was partitioned off from the rest of the cafe, am I right?  We used to love that area to sit and smoke - nice hideaway - we could see between the wooden slats who was coming in to the cafe and quickly get rid of the smokes, ashtray etc. if necessary.

Another image that sticks in my head when i think of cora's cafe is of kids standing at the counter, in swimming costumes, shivering, hair wet and plastered to their heads just run in from the swimming pool, money in hands extended over the counter trying to get served first to get back to the pool.  strange what images stick in one's head.

Hi Delia,

Thats the place,!!! you had the cafe portion at the front and the restaurant and the back... I suspect the brass prints were actually plastic but at the time I used to thik the were the real think, I seem to recal them as being of hambo women or something... I forgot about the sprints from the pool...

Michael Alexander

Was'nt that the only restaurant in town back then, before the Hexenkessel opened?

Late 60s
Any one remember the Star sweets and what colour your pee was?
Or the 5c creamy toffee that kept the dentist busy?
Or the lucky packets with badges; figurines and goodies of rock artist (Beatles + Stones) of that time - must be worth quite a bit today!

does any one remember the name of the packet of sweets that came packaged in a thin box,3or 4 different coloured ,wrapped ,chewy fruit flavoured sweets, upon opening them, they had different countries flag with a picture of a woman in that particular countries traditional dress printed on the inside, they too were in the cafe in the late sixties.

Perhaps if you described the woman in more detail, some of us might remember....   ;)
