I know Oranjemund has(d) a reputation for big drinking, I know visitors who were coming to Omund for their first time were amazed at the number of bottles next to the road when they turned right onto the dirt road heading north from Port Nolloth, but where in Oranjemund was your favourite place or bar to drink.....

Mine was on the roof of the Yacht Club!... ;D

Unfortunately I left OM before I turned 18 so never had the pleasure of buying a beer in any of the pubs at Oranjemend. >:(

I especially regret never going to Casey's and talking to the crow errr parrot.

The problem with going out in O'mund was that because it is/was such a small town, no matter where you went your folks got to hear about it the next day! Back in my day (which would be the early 90's) it was always to Palm Court after the movies!

The  3  bars  ..   I worked  in all  about  75 - 78   .. I worked  in caseys  with  the  Noisy  Parrot ..  Sportsmans  ( ex Kateys  bar )  and of  course  Stauchslager   where collar and  tie    was  required  ... Caseys  some  nights like a  budgie  cage   wild and  noisy   as only men  on  their  own  could  get  .. Sportsmans   upbeat  ,  men  and   women  mixed  and  then  some  times  also  like   a budgie  cage  with  all  hell  breaking  out    and  all  and sundry fighting  on  the  lawns  outside . ( got some  stories  to  tell )   The stauchslager  crowd    yes  genteel    sipping  gently  only  occasionaly   getting  noisy  or  out  of control ..  when the  hexenkessel  restaurant  opened   it became  a  lot more  busy  with  pre dinner drinks ..  That  was one experience  working behind  bars  cos  then one  got  to  see  people   at their   best  or  most  relaxed or  their  worst   spin  out of control .. other  interesting  was  working  at  the  dances  .. My good friend  then  Ronnie Emery  and  I were  Oom  Jans  favourites  for  the bar  at  the  end  of  the rec  Dance  hall  . cos  we worked  together  so well  and could  keep  a flow  going   behind a  small  and  badly  designed  bar ...  We  were  well  tipped  in  those  days  cos  of the  fast  service we  gave ..   Funtimes  indeed !

Actually now that you mention it, The Stauchslager was a lekker bar, I liked the style of the place and one would often forget the fact that you were not in Omund, due to the place being so dark and windowless!

Similar to Bobby and Robert, I left before I was 18.  I do remember the Rec Club being a popular spot.  And, yes, Sandy Buchanan prompted me to make a comment about foofy slides under The Bushes!

I was too young to drink too at 9 year old but loved the foofie slide, ive got a photo but cant get my picutes on here, will try again, sandy remembers the day i got my hair tangled in the thing...all i remember is letting go much to my mum and dads horror...landed on my feet though. Oh and the pool.....i just cant look at pics of that pool enough, i learnt to dive off that beloved spring board ages before i could swim....dad used to get ready below the board to fish me out before i drownded....and i have dreamt many many times that i was back diving off that board. thats where i spent most of my time in O/M, I remeber the little cafe...and the little pink chews they used to sell...sure they were called star......they made the toilet pink when you went if you ate more than 2.......Just read about the school, how sad to think after all this time that could now happen, i heted school all my life....but i loved that place.  Sandy...stop me you know i could go on forever. xx

Sporties / Palm Court... them Appie days... damn, if only you could still piss it up like that for 50 bucks. Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and any other day that brought on an unquenchable thirst that could only be remedied with a few pints...
Was the usual gathering place for a quick 1 during interval and after the movie. Dang. Miss the old cinema!!!
All things electrical contain smoke. Making it come out is easy; getting it back in? ... yeah right!!!

One of my memories of drinking at the Stauch before going into the Hexen Kessel for a great meal, was watching Edgar Selby's frustration should he arrive and note that "his" seat was occupied by a strange bum! I loved going to Sportsmans too! Such atmosphere always!

Like Sandy, most of us Appies worked where we could, being a barman was great, Sportsmans during interval at the Bioscope was crazy with everyone wanting to get their drinks before getting back to the movies.
Worked at Casies, Sportsmans & the Stauschlager, Supper Room Bar during functions and when needed at the bar in the Main Hall.

Sandy will remember when we used to pour double cane / Brandy /whiskey and have these ready for the rush to the bar. Also during company functions when the booze was free and it would be a bottle of brandy & 6 cokes etc for the table. ( I remember seeing some of these bottles going over the wall straingh into the Single quarters for the next day.)

When the Stauschlager chefs were thirsty, I used to send a couple of beers, courtisy of tip, through to the Kitchen, the chefs would ask  "what do you feel like eating" - Prawns in a white Perno sauce & rice, was a great change to the usual mess food.

But I digress, which Bar, come on Sandy, the Gun club bar was always great, at least I didn't have to work, I could drink and didn't have to serve anyone.
