For those of you that follow international rugby, here's something you might not have known.

When I was at OPS there was a chap in one of the afrikaans classes named Corne (or was it Cornel) I cant remember. Anyways he had this massive brother named Cobus who was already in high school and I only saw him sometimes in the holidays. Yup, Cobus Wiese the ex-Springbok rugby player is also an Oranjemunder. I wasn't sure at first, but he looked so familiar when I saw all those years later on the rugby field. After his interview in YOU magazine, there was no more doubt. He said that he spent some of his childhood in OM before his family packed up and moved to Luderitz.

Carl, Cobus has been back twice for various things, including that Afrikaans show with Errol TObios... something about the Kole.... There is more reference to the subject in a few other places on this site.... try a search for wiese.....

great player on the field,i admired the boys abillity

The show is "Oor die Kole" on Kyknet. Something of a post-mortem discussion of the past weekends games. Have you seen the size of Cobus lately? I wouldn't want to meet him in a dark alley.

Michael Alexander

I don't think there's an alley big enough for him......   laughpoint

Did u see the DVD that James Dalton made a few years back called Rugby's Greatest Hits? Cobus was featured a few times.

bobbysmith

very interested to see,you got a copy mate

Cobus was a lot smaller then, but he knew how to dish out punishment when it was needed on the field.

Michael Alexander

DOn't stone me, ok.... But I ain't a big fan of Kobus.....

I believe Jonty Rhodes is also an Oranjemunder. I havent been able to confirm it yet but will keep you updated.

Michael Alexander

Never heard that  one, somewhere else, buried deep in this forum there is a discussion on "famous" Oranjemunders.... I know Mark Shuttleworth and Percy Montgomerey are on the list.....

Mike you  and  Kobus would  make  a  mean   lock  pair  for  the  Oranjemund  1st team rugby , with Percy  at  fullback and Arthur Conrey  at  flyhalf  and Steven Hockney  at prop .

Michael Alexander

.... and where would you play?

I believe Mark Shuttleworth's dad was one of the doctors at the OM hospital.
