The kind of dier Bambi in the story is, lives in Asia round about India as far as I remember. Axis must be the name. I believe I've seen them in the zoo.

Barbara, you are right, it is a steenbok.  Looks like a young male.  For sure not a duiker, for they are more greyish coloured.  Very shy little buck and they are protected.
