My last position at the mine was Secretary to the Chief Security Superintendent.  I worked for Ed Knoesen, then Koos Brink and lastly it was Roger Burchell.

One Friday evening/early Saturday morning the CDM chopper flew out towards the mining area.  The pilot at the time was Norman Marais and the engineer Fanie van Staden.  Upon arrival at work we heard about the diamond theft.  We (myself, Patsie Prinsloo and Debbie Bouchard) were busy having a cup of coffee and in walked Ben Wiese (Kobus Wiese, springbok rugby player's father) with his pyjamas on.  All of us burst out laughing at him.  He did not think it was funny at all.  He did not have time to change when he was called out.  Wonder where all the people are that used to work with me like:  Bert de Jager, Jan Coetzer, Evert Geldenhuys (I heard he was working in Luderitz), Roger Burchell, Dave Hattingh, those are but a few of the people I can remember.

Who knows that diamond theft story , where the Okies landed a plane on the beach on the mining area, to pick up their stash of stones, but could'nt leave, because the sand was to soft.......?

You do realise that when you get told the true story behind these stories, you have to be killed... :(

Bev Burchell

Hi Charmaine

Nice to hear you are well.  Roger Burchell is my husband and send regards... he is fit and flourishing and living in Cape Town.  Still playing hockey and golf .. oh and he works too when he has to!!  Although retired we run a business doing Voice Stress Analysis... its very interesting and Rog loves it.

Stay well

Bev Burchell

re the plane and the mine etc.... Rog says to tell you the following:

This incident happened shortly before my arrival in 1973.  youa re correct in saying the plane landed safely ... but yeah .. it got stuck and couldnt take off.   The plane was never allowed to leave the mining area and last I knew it was on the Uubvley dump.  Jan Coeter (who has since retired) attended the scene and could tell you more.

Then there was the crossbows fired over the fence, with the parcels attached to them.....and not to mention the homing pigeons, we used to have about 24 of them at the back roof of spar about 12 years back, security turned up one day, and removed them, promising that they were going to "Good" homes on a farm, why did they never fly back here again...me suspects a pigeon spit down at th POH!

Hallo Adriaan

Weet jy dalk waar Evert Geldenhuys is?

Groete

Hi Pete

Thanks a lot for passing Evert's detail on to me. I still remember his green face during some of the "horrible" diamond theft recoveries.

Hi Adriaan

Dis goed so dat ons bietjie Afrikaans praat, sodat sommige van die souties nie kan verstaan nie.  Die souties was maar altyd in die meerderheid.  Lewe jou ouers nog? As jy dalk weet waar Oom Bert de Jager, Jan Coetzer, Patsy Prinsloo en Debbie Bourchard is, laat my asb weet.  Mooi bly.
