I have been reading the Afrikaanse Grappe!

Now someone in Oranjemund was once heard to remark..........................

Ek praat net suiwer Afrikaans.

Suiwer Afrikaans?

I see with great delight that it is still done!

Lekker "opmix".

ja my afrikaans is also sommer baie good
of course i am in shape...i'm round

That's the reason why I never claim to be fully bilingual.  Sometimes it's the spelling that forces me to mix and sometimes it's the lack of vocabulary.  Face it - in no other country in the world they can gooi like we do - and still understand each other.  I mean 'nice' just does'nt have the same meaning as 'lekker',  check hierso gets the attention much better than kyk hier etc.

Ag no, way too much effort to keep to the Suiwer side.  Excellent for those who do - got nothing against them - it's a skill to be admired.

Dalene, or anyone in the know of suiwer or other wise afrikaans here's a question
to settle a academic dispute btw my vrystaater former husband and myself, (remember a woman is always right), no seriously I would like to know really............

the differance between besoek and kuier.

I always understood that a besoek was short and purposeful

to kuier was to hang about (overnight or more) possibly to the point of out staying your welcome.

So right you are - clever we lotta women.

To explain it like this :  the preacher - dominee goes round in town from home to home to visit members of the congregation so, he is doing 'huis besoek'  -  there's something very, very wrong if the dominee is doing a huis-kuier!  Or you 'besoek' someone in hospital - you don't kuier them.

Now, when we lotta ex O'munders pitch at Mike an Michele's place for a reunion, have a jol, empty their fridge and freezer, make their dog's go stay with the SPCA willingly, and eventually find a free "FLY TO ANY DESTINATION OF YOUR DREAMS" ticket on our breakfast plates after two weeks or so -  then is was a kuier.  Not a very big one,  sort of just got to the first layer - many more to come, type of kuier.

Is this where you can live out your wildest childhood taunt again with that 'We-la-ke-pela , told you so' tune?

Ja nee, I knew I was spot on, and me with my vrot afrikaans and him with his "please don't try to praat the taal" -

to explain, my parents were Eng and Scots so us kids were 1st generation Souf afrikans, I only really spoke the taal when I went nursing,
so learned to speak with a Kaap accent, due to the patients being gangsters - you don't want to hear me it's not pretty.
Thank you, so much for that beautiful analogue - I feel M & M are getting worried about the promised reunion - I think the present residents are going to leave town and rent their houses out at exgaggerated prices for the period.

En jy kry dit nogal mooi reg!  You go girl.  Ek het darem in my lewe met die Engels gevorder van "throw some tea in for me, please" tot "would you pour.....".

Jy throw maar a English word in when you get stuck.Ek het die ou droppie baie geniet.Snaaks genoeg het my oudste met n regte egte afrikaaner getrou he speaks english deliciously. So die taal gaan nou in ons familie se blood wees

G'nite.

Een of ander Afrikaanse bliksempie het al vir my gesĂȘ ek kan maar Engels praat as ek wil!!  Ek is Afrikaans!   ;D

Dalene Steenkamp (Coetzee)

Hoera!  "Ek hou van 'n man wat sy man kan staan.........."  Die beiteltjie.

Yes .. Afrikaans .. a really  nice easy and  expressive taal ... I went to  Hugenote Hoerskool ( we  kept on stealing the umlaut from the E ) it was primarily afrikaans .. 3 -4 afr classa to one english per standard .. i used to get 95 % + for the taalbond ( higher ) exam  I used to do it for the fun of it .. .. i  do write and speak sort of fluently in afr but with the funny english accent which raises some  grins .. and as barb did i have become pretty good at the cape spanish version of the language .. sometimes my staff ask me ' wher do you  get that word from ? "  Hah !  listen and learn ...
To see  sometimes  requires that you  first believe .

Ja I love the afrikaans taal, especially now that  I have a sense of national identity living in a foreign country.  Don't get to talk much, but still have conversations with my ex - only when needing privacy, from out common interest our son who has a increasing interest in learning the taal if only to understand what we say, cos he knows we use it to talk about him behind his back,,,,,,,,,,
what fun.
