I always remember that every year Father Christmas ( Yes! I know he's real!) would arrive at the Xmas tree with a different mode of transport.... Helicopter, Ambulance and Fire Engine.... I remember Jim Reid and Roy Fields playing the role!

can any of harry smiths appies remeber making an aeroplane out of a mini for the xmas celebrations on the cricket field, the same year the circus and the trapeze artists performed, long shot, any one got a picture of that day.

As a really young kid we would fry flags at the gate to indicate number of kids in the house to receive presents delivered by father christmas.
I remember thinking how mad, a man red in the face dresssed up so warmly, for the heat of the desert.  The excuses as to where the reindeer were was legendary and how he'd been rescued by whatever mode of transport was being used that year.

Does any one remember the father Christmas house that was mounted above the entrance of Omund shopping centre in the late 60s.
It was the job of Erwin, Paul, Albert, Gary and I to push father Christmas out every 10 minutes, play a recording "Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas" and pull a rope to wave father Christmas's arm.
As things go with children you start getting bored and up to mischief - pushed father Christmas and yanked his arm so hard that it fell off.

Needless to say we were fired!!

The  Christmas  parties  ..  no expense  spared  ... sadly  no  more  ... I  have  some  pics  here .. The  aeroplane  made  from  an  old  mini   that someone  mentioned  .. the  trapeze .. again  no  expense  spared ..  My  dad  made  it  and  the  troupe  were  allowed  to  take  it  back .. it  was  shipped out secretly  in  the middle  of  the  night  ..  It  stood  for  many years  at  the  back  of  the  YMCA in Obs   where  Rob  Anderson  trained  the  aspiring  trapezists ...
The  one year  parachutists  ..  and  no  pics  but  I remember  the  sikorski helicopter piloted  by  Kikki  Berteaux's  father   as well  at  one  of  the  do's ...  great  memories

I remember my oom Hennie Mouton being Father Christmas when i was a little girl.  That was in the 80's.  We used to get those little "sweet sock" from (then) CDM with a hot dog and cooldrink.  All good memories, just a pitty we can't share the same with our kids.  Maybe we should try and oganise something similar for one last time!!!!!!  All the good memories....all just in your mind and pics, no more a reality.  Very unfortunate!!!!  I'ts very sad how things have to change. :'(
Life is given to us one day at a time.  Don't look back and grieve about the past, for it is gone.  Do not be troubled by die future, as God will provide.  Live for today and make it so beautiful that it will be worth remembering....

the one thing that really impressed me was how your folks always had an answer when you started questioning the validity of father christmas. i asked how it was possible for him to be in oranjemund so close to christmas and where whereare the reindeer , why did he arrive in a helicopter. of course my parents replied without hesitation. he was asked by us to come pay a special visit , and as for the riendeer issue .... no its to hot for them , they normaly only fly around at night so there are at the stables resting. Of course later i also realised we had no chimmney .....no we let him in throughthe door they would say.....
of course i am in shape...i'm round

Picture this  ,  First Christmas in O-mund - three panic stricken Irish children.
Living in a house with no chimley for the first time,  how is Santa going to get in.
Mom - we will leave the door open.
Us   - What if someone steals our presents.
Mom - we will leave the door closed. and send him a key.
Us   - how will he know it for our house and front door key or back door key.
then double checking that my Mom and Dad had the Dog locked up on Christmas eve so Santa could get in.
Poor mom had to write all sort of letters - god help the person at the post office .
