I remember many a night my Dad up on the roof , Mom at the door and one of us at the TV.  Left a bit Right a bit.  Stop you've got a picture , no it's gone again.  Every time there was an empty house - steal their old poll and weld it to ours to see if the TV works any better. And on a windy night it would bang against the house.

Hi Claire - had a good laugh when I read your posting about the tv arials. I too can remember Dad turning the pole, Mom at the window and one of us at the tv. Would just get the picture right and then the wind would blow the pole around! Our kids our spoilt - they don't know what it's like to watch tv through the snow! Remember when on Tues and Thurs the evening programmes were in Afrikaans and you could tune the radio in to get the English dialogue!

I remember that - the radio was always a few second behind - the sound didn't match the lips.

When tv came to the  E section of 1st avenue in 1976, the Van Ecks, neigbours to Bonnie Viljoen, had a huge pole with 2 big aerials mounted on it, for years unbeknown to them, the Alexander boys, would be watching TV with them, the only thing was you could'nt hear the sound through the windows and over the fence....

Hey Mike,

Remember we used to go down to Jacqui and Shanti's house (can't remember their surname) at the bush end of first avnue and watch the hardy boys on their TV before we had one..

Remember how we would have to wait for tv to start i think it was around half four . Then that great big  SABC TV logo would come on . And and then end they would play the national anthem with the flag flapping

Jeez, I remember when seeing an FM aerial on a roof was so incredibly exciting. Hell that household was massively technologically advanced!

Talking of that dual language TV thing, where you could tune the radio in and get the English voice version of the program you were watching, One night , Paul and I tuned into the wrong radio station and the advert on the radio was that jingle for Firestones, the one that goes .... them stones them stones, them firestones, well anyhow old Krokidil PW Botha, black hat and all was on the box , during the news ,waving his finger around.....lips moving ,,looking ever so serious ... singing Dem Stones, Dem Stones them fire stones..... man we laughed so much ... that we cried.....

Telly and my time in Omund is remembered by the fact that there wasn't any - just snow storms but my mom was a techno gadget freak and we did have the first tv games, Many years later I was viisitnig the natural science museum in London and the game console was on display, A blib that you played tennis type game with, or the laser gun shooting game that Gary Wilson and Warren Summers so liked to come over and play.

That machine you are talking about was a black and silver box, with two flimsy yoysticks and it was called Teljoy and the name of the game you played was pong........

Pong yea, we have a playstation 3 with a digital telly and sky plus in out lounge next to the ipod and speaker system.
I want a wii for my next gadget? what do you think?

I don't have time to play all those games, but the Wii did take my fancy though..... it;s a novel way how you can play by moving yourself with the game.... might be a great way for me to play and lose weight at the same time..... wonder if it comes with chess!

lol, chess okay are you thinking about those massive pieces you get in big parks that you have to pick up and move.

The wii is a great console for second game console, obviosly I never get a chance to play on the play station, anyway I'm so uncoordinated I am rubbish when i have been allowed to play the boys collapse laughing.

In the late 70's the school built one of those big chessboards behind the Art class, which is still there today, ( I meant the Art class, same spot)
