I remember my mother telling the story of her arrival at the bridge following her marriage to Brian.

She was driven to the gate from CT following her honeymoon and all her belongings were loaded onto the barge, as the bridge was flooded or out of service can't remember -the water level rose up the barge till it was just an inch of barge sticking out, at this point she was invited tohop aboard - no way she said, never it'll never make it. Yes she was assured NO she said.
She had arrived 2 years prior in CT from Scotland on a union castle liner
On this day she had been driven through Namaqualand on the N7 road, gravel from Kolmanskop, she had seen nothing for miles, she'd seen cities become towns then dorpies then shacks and finally a barge -
that was too much for this city girl.
She refused, they had to take her luggage and return for her,
and I picture her like Cleopatra riding across the barge on her own...

Mom was married in 1956/7.

I can just picture it .... Cleopatra ... in her splendour on the barge  albeit a bit rattled  after a long dusty journey ..
To see  sometimes  requires that you  first believe .
